Video: Heat Meter measures energy use in real time
2013-03-12 19:38:49| InfoWorld: Top News
A new, Wi-Fi connected device called the Heat Meter allows homeowners to track propane, natural gas or oil use in real time and compare their home's efficiency with others in the area. The small unit attaches magnetically to a furnace or boiler and listens to vibrations and when the unit's flame ignites. Since most heating systems burn fuel at a constant rate, as long as the Heat Meter, made by Y Shape Inc., can detect how long the flame is burning, it will be able to accurately predict energy costs. Homeowners will need to input their home's square footage.
Australia: March heat has forecasters wondering 'who stole autumn'?
2013-03-12 09:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Age: Melbourne's March is already deep into record heat territory. With today's 30-plus maximum reached, the city has notched nine such days in a row, breaking the record for heatwave duration of eight days. All four previous events over the past 156 years happened in January or February, and the last one 52 years ago. Where's autumn? Weatherzone senior meteorologist Brett Dutschke said warmer-than-normal ocean temperatures and a southerly shift in the jetstream meant there was little sign of autumn...

Ocean Heat Can Predict Malaria Outbreaks in India
2013-03-10 13:10:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Climate News Network: Health officials may have a new way to anticipate malaria epidemics in north-west India. All they have to do is check the sea surface temperatures in the tropical south Atlantic, off the coast of western Africa. If the water is colder than normal in July, then prepare for an epidemic of the Anopheles mosquito and its little Plasmodium parasite four months later in Kutch and the Thar Desert of India. Research shows if the water is colder than normal in July, then prepare for an epidemic of the...

Recent heat spike unlike anything in 11,000 years
2013-03-07 20:12:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: A new study looking at 11,000 years of climate temperatures shows the world in the middle of a dramatic U-turn, lurching from near-record cooling to a heat spike. Research released Thursday in the journal Science uses fossils of tiny marine organisms to reconstruct global temperatures back to the end of the last ice age. It shows how the globe for several thousands of years was cooling until an unprecedented reversal in the 20th century. Scientists say it is further evidence that modern-day...
