BMC launches service to host private-label enterprise app stores

BMC Software has set up a private-label marketplace service that will allow ISVs (independent software vendors) and other organizations to run their own online app stores. "It is sort of like an Amazon-like marketplace for enterprise customers or ISVs," said Jason Frye, senior director in the office of the BMC Chief Technology Officer, referring to the popular Amazon online store. An app store can be set up within a few weeks, potentially cutting the time needed to set up a deployment from scratch, he said.

Now that many organizations see the utility in big data, BMC Software has provided a way to incorporate jobs from the Hadoop data processing platform into larger enterprise workflows. "We provide a finer level of granularity for Hadoop workflows, and not just within Hadoop, but across the enterprise," said Shamoun Murtza, BMC director in the company's office of the chief technology officer.

BMC buys Partnerpedia for secure app-store technology

BMC is continuing its push into the consumerization-of-IT trend with the acquisition of Partnerpedia, which makes software companies can use to roll out secure, governed app stores to their end users. Terms of the deal, which closed last month, were not revealed. Partnerpedia's AppZone software gives IT departments the ability to make volume purchases of applications from sources such as Apple's iTunes store and push them into a private catalog for company use, said Geoff Mair, senior director of product development for BMC and founder of Partnerpedia.

BMC set to go private in $6.9 billion deal

BMC has agreed to be acquired by a private investment consortium headed by Bain Capital and Golden Capital, in a deal worth about $6.9 billion. The deal, which had been rumored for some time, is expected to close later this year, BMC said Monday. However, BMC has the right to solicit better offers from third parties for the next 30 days and the acquisition is subject to shareholder approval.
