(Telecompaper) An investigation by the US Senate has found that the government exercises little formal oversight of foreign telecom operators operating in the country. The report from the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the Senate called for the establishment of a statutory authority to supervise foreign operators and protect national security interests.

FCC fines carriers USD 200 mln for sharing customer location data

(Telecompaper) The Federal Communications Commission has fined four US mobile operators for failing to protect consumer real-time location data. The FCC has proposed fine of over USD 91 million for T-Mobile US, over USD 57 million for AT&T, over USD 48 million for Verizon and more than USD 12 million for Sprint. The operators were also admonished for disclosing customer location information without authorisation to a third party.

FCC to vote in November on banning USF carriers from using Huawei, ZTE kit

(Telecompaper) The US is moving ahead with regulation to ban operators that receive universal service funds from using equipment from Chinese suppliers Huawei and ZTE due to security concerns. FCC chairman Ajit Pai said the regulation would include funding to help operators already using the suppliers to replace their equipment with new suppliers.
