Trucking stocks tumbled today after Knight Transportation cut its Q4 earnings guidance , citing excess capacity, a reduction in non-contract opportunities and an increase in driver pay - problems evident throughout the industry. Citi downgraded KNX to Neutral from Buy with a $25 price target today, and sees the risk of additional freight slowing as a possibility; although KNX's Q4 freight activity is similar to 2014 levels, slack capacity and less urgency from shippers is pulling volume out of lucrative seasonal trades, Citi says.

Knight Cuts Fourth-Quarter Earnings Forecast

Knight Transportation Inc. lowered its fourth-quarter earnings estimate by about 15%, citing more moderate rate increases, fewer spot market opportunities, additional driver pay increases and reduced gains on used equipment sales. Knight , based in Phoenix, now expects earnings of 31 cents to 33 cents per share, compared with its earlier estimate of 36 cents to 38 cents per share.

Washington Post: A Maryland climate-change panel called Wednesday for the state to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent compared to 2006 levels within the next 15 years. Dec 17 General Mills Inc cut its full-year sales forecast and reported its second straight fall in quarterly sales, hurt by a strong dollar and weak demand for its snacks and baking products in the United States, its biggest market. The company said on Thursday it now expected net sales to fall in low single-digit percentage terms in the year ending May on a constant-currency basis.
