Summary An experienced and knowledgeable engineer required to support ESA in developing the Gaia missions Science Operations Centre at ESAC. Objective ESAs Gaia mission is designed to create an accurate and complete astrometric catalogue which will serve for decades to come. The data processing and catalogue creation is carried out by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC formed by around 400 individuals and six main data processing centres distributed across Europe. The Gaia SOC at ESAC is an integral part of DPAC and plays a key role in designing the overall system architecture and developing and operating parts of the Core Processing systems viz. Initial Data Treatment IDT, First Look FL, and the Astrometric Global Iterative Solution. ESAC will also form the hub for data exchange via the Main Database MDB. This MDB will form the input for all processing and will be augmented with the output of all processing to arrive at a new version. Responsibilities Duties Develop and maintain modules, applications and tools specific to product generation framework and quality control framework Ensure timely delivery of SW releases and relative increments Perform SW architectural design as needed Prepare and maintain SW documentation Develop and maintain unit test harnesses Report on progress and problem areas Participate in the Configuration Control Boards applicable to the development and operation of the software Followingup and tracking the correction and resolution of problem reports Implement approved software enhancement requests Qualifications Experience University degree in computer science, or software engineering, or scientific discipline, or equivalent. Experience in interacting with the science community would be an advantage. We are looking for Spacecraft Operations Analysts SOE to be part of the flight control teams performing spacecraft operations in Germany. The tasks to be performed are those typical for a spacecraft operations analyst to configure the mission operational tools to support the operations, which includes Set up of spacecraft and operational data bases. Implement tools needed to manipulate the databases as required. Updating the databases and performing maintenance of the databases applying strict configuration control procedures. Conversion of industry provided databases into formats needed by the satellite mission control system and operational tools. Applying configuration control procedures for documentation in use for all operational tasks and duties under his supervision. Imposition of the procedures. Preparation of database documentation. Supervision of routine operations and any others authorised by the Spacecraft Operations Manager, following established rules and procedures. In case of a ground or space segment anomaly, provide first level contingency recovery support. Introduction and maintenance of appropriate working practices and procedures for routine and anomaly reporting, data analysis, recording and maintenance of system status, recording of operational activities. Support system maintenance activities. Maintenance of a set of reference operational documentation and ensure operational changes are applied. Analysis of system problems by collection and evaluation of appropriate data sets using the reporting and analysis tools available. Collect information data regarding the execution of the mission and provide inputs for the various mission reports. Support data archiving and mission run down activities. The Spacecraft Analyst tasks include responsibility for the organisation, training and operational readiness of the Spacecraft Controllers assigned to each of the missions being supported. The operations are conducted according to established rules and procedures. As an analyst you will be required to familiarise yourself with the procedures and tools that are needed to perform the routine spacecraft control operations. You will take part in test campaigns and simulations, and if necessary arrange for the participation of the spacecraft controllers. You will conduct regular operational readiness training and simulations with controllers proficiency training. The tasks to be performed require considerable initiative, flexibility and independence in executing the assigned tasks. These are full time positions, located in Germany. Working time is normal office hours with occasional extended hours during critical operations periods. Qualifications This position requires an appropriate education and a good background in a technical or scientific discipline, to the level equivalent to Senior Technician. Essential skills are Experience in working in an operational environment. Good experience with office automation tools, including MSEXCEL and MSACCESS use of functions, queries, macros, reports, input forms, etc.. Fluent written and spoken English. Ability to organise, coordinate and train a Spacecraft Controller team. Familiarity with operational training. Familiarity with satellite control systems, ideally SCOS2000. Desirable skills are Familiarity with programmingscripting languages e.g. C, Java, JavaScript. Familiarity with the ESOC working environment and Quality Management System QMS. Knowledge of satellite or ground operations, or nonspace operational environments. Experience with mission planning systems. Experience of reporting on operational systems.
