Sony prevails in patent suit battle with defense contractor L-3
2014-09-13 06:51:41| Telecom - Topix.net
A federal judge has ruled in favor of Sony Corp in a long-running case, overturning a jury verdict for L-3 Communications Corp [LLLCO.UL] and invalidating several parts of an image sensor patent held by the defense contractor. Judge Richard Andrews of the U.S. District Court in Delaware said on Friday that the jury in 2013 was wrong to find L-3's patent claims were not "obvious," a key criteria to ensure an invention is sufficiently unique to be patented.

Apple's slide-to-unlock patent not willfully infringed by Samsung, judge rules
2014-09-10 15:41:30| InfoWorld: Top News
While Samsung Electronics infringed on Apple's slide-to-unlock patent, that infringement was not willful, a U.S. court has ruled. Samsung had asked Judge Lucy Koh of the San Jose division of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California to rule that it did not wilfully infringe on the patent. It did so after a jury in May awarded Apple $119.6 million in damages because Samsung infringed some of Apple's patents. Apple got much less than the $2 billion it had asked for though.

Apple will not be allowed a new trial on damages for infringement of its patents by Samsung Electronics, a U.S. court decided Monday. It made the request after a jury awarded it $119.6 million in damages in May, much less than the $2 billion it had asked for.
