KPN to up mobile coverage in sparsely populated areas
2015-04-29 08:00:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) KPN announced it will be putting extra efforts into improving mobile coverage in sparsely populated areas. The operator expects to iron out hundreds of bottlenecks over the next three years by using new technologies. So far, the focus has gone to improving coverage in areas of at least 1,500 inhabitants but it will now go to locations with a lower population density. KPN told Telecompaper that it will especially look to improve the range of low frequencies, and that it will likely add more masts. The operator wants to improve the range of all technologies, for calling and the use of mobile data. KPN said it will aim for an average speed of 20 Mbps for all users.

KPN confirms 'multiple parties' interested in Base
2015-04-06 09:35:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) KPN confirmed that "multiple parties" have expressed interest in acquiring its Belgian mobile operator Base. The statement from the Dutch operator follows a report in the Belgian press that cable operators Telenet and Voo were already in advanced negotiations for a joint bid for Base. KPN did not name the potential bidders but said it was considering all options for Base. KPN tried to sell Base earlier in 2012 but was reportedly unable to acquire the desired price. The latest reports put Base's value at around EUR 1 billion. Other potential bidders are thought to include the French operators Altice and Iliad.
