Job description Responsibilities For Termas longterm customer, the European Southern Observatory ESO, an international astronomical institute based in Garching close to Munich we are currently looking for an experienced Software Engineer. The ESO Very Large Telescope VLT is a collection of optical and near Infrared telescopes that can operate independently or combined as an interferometer. Automated processing of telescope data is managed by a suite of data pipeline software. The Software Engineer will support activities at the site to work on tasks such as Development and maintenance of software in CC. Experience with implementation of multithreadeddistributed applications. Experience with real time operating systems and embedded systems preferred VxWorks. Candidate selection will be driven by software skills, although domain knowledge and a demonstrated ability to function in a scientific environment is also a consideration. This is a fulltime position at ESO in Garching Munich, Germany with a planned starting date in January 2016. Qualifications Competencies Applicants shall have an university degree, preferably in computer science or other suitable qualification together with some background in data processing. Essential skills are Minimum 5 years of experience working as software engineer Strong skills developing applications in CC programming languages Experience in implementation of high level, object oriented multithreadeddistributed applications Experience in real time operating systems and embedded systems preferred VxWorks Strong background in unit testing Familiarity with Linux Experience in the full lifecycle of software projects Knowledge of version control, including the related tooling Experience in working in software development teams Fluency in English spoken and written, as English is the working language Desirable skills are Implementation of software frameworks and pattern based design Knowledge of control systems theory andor digital signal processing Practical experience in implementation of control andor digital signal processing software Familiarity with CORBA and DDS distributed middleware Good command of C template and generic programming techniques Familiarity with programming of vector arithmetical units in C Basic knowledge of adaptive optics algorithms Good command of MATLAB Previous experience in a similar consultancy role, i.e., as resident consultant operating onsite within a customer organisation Exposure international andor scientific organisation The position requires a great deal of independence and selfmotivation.
