Space Atmospheric Physics Group, Department of Physics South Kensington Campus Instrumentation Engineer Salary range 33,590 41,540 p.a. Fixed term 1 year with possibility of extension, commencing as soon as possible Applications are invited for an engineer or scientist to undertake system engineering and operations roles on the JUICE and Cassini space missions within the Space Atmospheric Physics group of the Department of Physics. The group has a major scientific and hardware involvement in worldleading heliospheric, magnetospheric and planetary physics space missions. Further details can be found at httpwww.imperial.ac.ukresearchspat. JUICE Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer is the first largeclass mission in ESAs Cosmic Vision 20152025 programme. Planned for launch in 2022 and arrival at Jupiter in 2030, it will spend at least three years making detailed observations of the planet and three of its largest moons, Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. Imperial College London has been selected as the Principal Investigator of the magnetometer, which will be designed and built by the team at Imperials Space Magnetometer Laboratory. The project is currently in Phase B1 stage focusing on instrument design, interface definition and modeling leading up to the anticipated mission adoption in 2014. CassiniHuygens is a NASAESA mission which has been in orbit around the Saturn system since mid2004, with mission extensions taking the mission through to September 2017. Imperial College London is the Principal Investigator of the magnetometer instrument and is responsible for the operation of the instrument, data processing and health and safety. The JUICE role will involve tasks such as instrument design, specification of instrument interfaces thermal, electrical, mechanical, tradeoff analyses, CAD modeling, parts selection and preparation of documentation. This role also involves taking responsibility for leading analyses in a range of technical areas associated with the instrument e.g. pointing stability, magnetic field disturbances etc. Towards the end of the term support for breadboarding activities may also be required. The post holder will provide support for instrument reviews with ESA, industry and partner institutes within the magnetometer consortium. This will involve some travel on occasion. Training will be given on Cassini magnetometer flight operations and the post holder will assist in aspects of the daily planning and execution of Cassini MAG flight operations. A degree in electronic engineering, physics or a closely related discipline or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience is essential. Also essential is proven capability and experience in the design and use of high end scientific instrumentation, analogue and digital electronics, ideally for the space environment. You must have previous experience of working in a team to deliver technical projects within required deadlines and experience in the preparation of technical documents in accordance to formal standards. Experience of working with systems requirements and interface definition for ESA missions and performing mechanical or thermal analysis would be particularly beneficial.
