Tele Columbus to introduce 400 Mbps connections in Potsdam

(Telecompaper) Tele Columbus announced it will launch a new internet service on 1 April with download speeds of up to 400 Mbps. The new service will be first introduced in the region of Potsdam where 40,000 households are connected to Tele Columbus' network. The cable network operator has been expanding its network using a hybrid fibre coaxial structure and FTTB. Prices for the 400-megabit product will be announced for the market launch in April. A roll-out of the service to further regions is planned, an exact timetable is still to be set.

Vodafone Italia unveils 300 Mbps FTTH network in Milan

(Telecompaper) Vodafone Italia has officially unveiled its 300 Mbps FTTH service in Milan, the next phase in its plan to expand its fibre-optic network to 7 million households, a quarter of the Italian population, by 2016. Last month the operator launched a similar 300 Mbps FTTH service in Bologna, part of its collaboration with broadband provider Metroweb. Vodafone said the new rollout means a total of eight Italian cities can access FTTH at speeds of 100 Mbps or more and the company is working on extending the network to 40 cities. The celebrate the launch of the 300 Mbps FTTH service in Milan, Vodafone has set up a 300-meter long installation with coloured lights along the Corso Como thoroughfare in the city centre.

Qualcomm launches LTE Cat 10 modem for up to 450 Mbps

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm has introduced its fifth-generation LTE modem, the Gobi 9x45, and its second-generation Qualcomm RF360 Envelope Tracker, the QFE3100.  Designed with the latest LTE connectivity, the products are currently sampling with customers and are anticipated to be commercially available in 2015. The 9x45 modem is the first announced Category 10 LTE cellular modem that supports global Carrier Aggregation for download speeds of up to 450 Mbps, upload speeds of up to 100 Mbps, and CA across the TDD and FDD spectrum. The modem is based on the second-generation 20nm technology node and supports up to 60 MHz 3x CA in the downlink and up to 40 MHz 2x CA in the uplink. The 9x45 modem integrates all major cellular standards, including DC-HSPA, EVDO, CDMA 1x, GSM and TD-SCDMA, supports all major RF bands and band combinations, and provides global position support for all major constellations including GPS, Beidou, Glonass and Galileo. Additionally, the modem features integrated support for LTE Broadcast, VoLTE and LTE Dual SIM. The QFE3100 is optimized for a 30 percent smaller board area and enhanced power efficiency compared to the previous generation, as well as allows improved calibration and implementation tools to ease Envelope Tracking design-in for OEMs and accelerate commercial deployment. This Envelope Tracker is designed to enable sleeker designs and improved battery life by reducing power amplifier power consumption and heat generation.
