Atlantic Broadband buys MetroCast cable ops for USD 1.4 bln

(Telecompaper) Cogeco Communications said that its Atlantic Broadband unit has agreed to buy all of MetroCast's brand name cable systems from Harron Communications for USD 1.4 billion. Cogeco said the deal will help the company expand in North America and further into the US cable market. Under the agreement, the Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec will invest USD 315 million for a 21 percent stake in Atlantic Broadband's holding company. The rest of the purchase price will be financed by secured debt financing from two banks.

Novatel sells mobile ops, MiFi spots to TCL for USD 50 mln

(Telecompaper) Novatel Wireless has agreed to sell its mobile broadband operations, including its MiFi branded hotspots and USB modem lines, to Hong Kong's TCL for USD 50 million in cash. The deal is subject to the usual regulatory approvals, as well as the approval of Novatel stockholders and convertible noteholders. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of next year. Novatel will now put its attention on creating a new public holding company and a new operating structure. The company is currently considering several names and logos to be adopted by the new company going forward.
