After coal plant outage, utility challenged over charges

NorthWestern Energy makes its case to state regulators Tuesday in a dispute over at least $8.5 million that the utility collected from Montana customers after a 2013 power plant outage. The South Dakota-based utility said in filings with the state Public Service Commission that the charges were needed to offset costs for replacement power bought on the open market.

Patriot Coal's latest reorganization plan is drawing opposition from the federal government, regulators in four states, creditors and others ahead of a bankruptcy court hearing on whether it should be approved. Opponents say in motions filed this week that the plan is not feasible and contains provisions that violate bankruptcy law.
