Junior Stress Analyst Spacecraft Structures and Components Key Tasks and Responsibilities As part of the Structural Engineering team in the Mechanical Engineering department, you will work on projects such as MPCV Orion, Bartolomeo or SpaceTug and have the following responsibilities Performance of structural predimensioning and concept definition Stress analyses of primary and secondary structures as well as of components and tubing applying FEM Performance of mechanical interface verifications Justification of NonConformances Close collaboration with the teams Mechanical Design Office, Thermal Engineering as well as with Systems Engineering. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience Masters Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering First experience in aeronautics and aerospace Engineering Lightweight structures, FEM, Pre Postprocessing Linear Nonlinear stress and stability analyses Mechanical interface verifications e.g. VDI 2230 Material selection and properties Space and human space perimeter Knowledge of Catia V5, Nastran, Pastran, Hyperworks Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of German is an advantage. Location Noordwijk, Netherlands NL Our team and mission The Structures Mechanisms and Materials Division is the centre of competence of the Agency in all areas related to Spacecraft and Launcher Structures, and Mechanisms, Tribology and Pyrotechnic devices, as well as Materials and Processes. This encompasses spacecraft and launcher lightweight structures, stable structures, advanced mechanical materials applications, structural dynamics, damage tolerance, deployable structuresbooms, active structures, holddown and release devices, electrical motors for space mechanisms, launcher and reentry vehicle hot and cold structures, landing attenuation systems, seals, valves, parachute systems, separation systems, solar array drive mechanisms, reaction wheels, pointing mechanisms, pyrotechnics, bearings and tribology aspects. It provides support to projects, preparatory programs and technology programs. Within this frame, the Structures Section is in charge of all structural engineering aspects. Interested candidates are encouraged to visit the ESA website httpwww.esa.int Fields of activities The Trainee will participate in the conception, analysis and development of structures for use in space vehicles. Assisting ESA engineers working in this domain, the holder of the training position will be given specific tasks which may include Perform evaluate instrument satellite accommodation studies, familiarization with project requirements and CAD tools Catia. Perform structural modelling activities and structural static dynamic vibroacoustic shock analyses Nastran, Abaqus, VAOne, etc, in support to ongoing spacecraft and launcher programs. Participate to the definition improvement verification of structural configuration analysis tools including participation to and development of the satellite Concurrent Design Facility. Perform Fracture Mechanics Analysis and evaluate material properties for manned and unmanned spacecraft ESACRACK, NASGRO. Participate to the definition improvement verification of FSI Fluid Structure Interaction analysis tools with emphasis in sloshing, water landing and parachute deployment structural applications. Perform numerical simulations of microvibration related problems considering characterization of disturbers at the source and evaluation of possible isolation and attenuation of the environment at the target. Perform HyperVelocity Impact Simulations and related analyses for the different Spacecraft protection measures against inorbit MicroMeteoroid and Debris Impacts. Support the development of new technologies for structural design hot structures concepts and materialshealth monitoring concepts for Reusable LaunchReentry Vehicles, including related engineering analyses and support to ongoing programmes. Support to mechanical test programmes, including the development and application of tools for mathematical model correlation crosschecks between analytical predicted and experimentally identified modes, deflections, strain. Participate in the development and application of the Agencys structural analysis tools e.g. ESACOMP, Nastran, Abaqus for spacecraft and launcher composites structures, including the evaluation of composite test methods and implementation of relevant interfaces in ESACOMP. Participate in the development of tools and methodologies for dynamic analysis of spacecraft and launchers, e.g. Coupled Loads Analysis and Shock propagation analysis, low, medium and high frequency. Participate to the development of stochastic analysisdesign methods, e.g. for the areas Damage Tolerance, mathematical model correlation, buckling and thermoelastic stability. Technical competencies Knowledge of relevant technical domains Relevant experience gained during internshipsproject work Breadth of exposure coming from past andor current researchactivities Knowledge of ESA and its programmesprojects Behavioural competencies Self Motivation Communication Continuous Learning CrossCultural Sensitivity Teamwork Education Applicants should have just completed, or be in their final year of a University course at Masters Level or equivalent in Aeronautical Mechanical Engineering, with some knowledge of the topics to be addressed e.g. structural dynamics, stress analysis, composite structures, active control, hot structures, hypervelocity, structural design. Additional requirements In addition to the above competencies, applicants should demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. Applicants must be fluent in English andor French, the working languages of the Agency. A good proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
