A vacancy has arisen for a Lead Software Architect with Astrium in Stevenage, to work within the Data Processing On Board Software Department for the Solar Orbiter. The Solar Orbiter mission, developed by ESA in collaboration with NASA, is designed to carry an extensive complement of scientific instruments to the nearsun environment and will be able to provide unique insights in the workings of our sun. The department is responsible for the On Board Software design, development and verification and the direct monitoring of the Independent Software Validation Verification ISVV. As such, the Software Architect is responsible for ensuring all software development activities are properly coordinated across the whole project, that agreed schedule are maintained, and that all activities are successfully completed within the defined budgets. The key responsibilities of the role are as follows Monitoring and reporting of progress and status of all software related activities to Solar Orbiter project management team and the department management team. Coengineering discussions with other system architects Functional Validation, Thermal, AOCS etc. in order to shape software requirements cost and schedule to meet project needs. Management and coordination on project basis of a small team of Software Architects working on the Solar Orbiter project. Organising software technical meetings and teleconferences. Technical definition and review of all inputs to the software development team Astrium internal Software Department, plus some contractors. Notably collection, consolidation of all software user requirements. Identification of data interface exchange needs and software interfaces with the other projects components. Supervision of the overall cycle of the software development and verification specification, design, coding, unit tests, integration tests, verification tests. Preparation and supporting of all related reviews with ESA. Defining the maintenance concepts for the software. In coordination with the Engineering team of the projects, managing the changes of the software requirements through the software life cycle, defining the new versions of the software and the schedulecosts consequences. In coordination with the project anomalies manager and the software QA, managing the anomalies found in the software through the software life cycle, defining the new versions of the software and the schedulecosts consequences. Controlling project budget and schedule, defining risks and risks mitigation strategies. ISVV technical subcontracts management technical review of the ISVV subcontractors inputs, outputs and coordination control of ISVV feedback to the software subcontractors. A lead engineer with excellent team skills and a demonstrated experience in an engineering leadership role for test bench development activities is being recruited by Astrium Limited in Stevenage. The successful applicant will be responsible for the definition, procurement and acceptance of the Functional Verification Infrastructure FVI that consists of a number of numerical and hardware in the loop test benchestest beds used to support satellite functional verification tasks. As the FVI architect you will be responsible for defining and controlling the overall requirements baseline from a users point of view, managing the procurement, development, acceptance and maintenance of the various test benchestest beds according to the project needs. The Satellite FVI, Engineering Tools Control Ground Segment division is responsible for the development of the FVI elements for space programmes. The FVI elements consist of a number of test benchesbeds software and hardware in the loop used for the verification of the AOCS algorithms and AOCS performance in closed loop, development and validation of the onboard SW and the AIT procedures, validation of the functional chains and HWSW interfaces of the equipments and the space system itself during the AIT campaigns. In addition to the test benchesbeds the FVI also includes the Data Base tools and the Central Checkout System that performs the monitoring and control of the equipmentsatellite test via TMTC and SCOEs. The division consists of departments in the UK, France and Germany. Development takes place across the different intercompany sites, with the prime team based in the UK. This role reports directly to the program manager and to the department manager. You should be able to travel and work oversees for short periods of time. Primary Responsibilities Analyse the system requirements, and derive requirementsspecifications related to the FVI. Ensure that the FVI is consistent with the external interface requirements and constraints. Perform the Functional Verification Infrastructure procurement planning supervise the development and procurement of the different elements of the test benches. Management of the overall Functional Verification Infrastructure activities, schedule, quality, cost, risks and baseline changes. Organise and chair FVI progress reviews and meetings support project reviews and meetings Define the FVI engineering planning i.e. the development, verification and implementation planning Act as a focal point for any system level engineering and FVAIT support related to the FVI. Management of the interfaces to the AOCS, OnBoard Software, Functional Verification, Assembly Integration and Test teams. Management interfaces to the data base architect for definitionimplementation of the database tools Management of interfaces for definitionimplementation of the Central Checkout System CCS Support the FVI development team in specific design solutions and implementations Support the FVI development team during the FVI verification, delivery and acceptance of the test benches Acceptance the test benches and coordination of the maintenance activities. Secondary Responsibilities Definition of training plans to enhance the technical skills of the team Review and participate in proposals. The successful applicant will have the following skills and experience Degree in computer science, software engineering, or other engineering related discipline Experience as a technical lead during the requirements phase, development or maintenance of software andor hardware in the loop test benchesbeds Experience in software development using CC, Java Knowledge of one or more of the following data buses SpaceWire, MilSTD 1553, CAN bus Experience in the project lifecycle from requirements, design, development, integration, testing and customer delivery and acceptance Experience in project control Knowledge of the ECSS software standards is desirable. Second Mission Aeolus Named after Aeolus, who in Greek mythology was appointed keeper of the winds by the Gods, will be the firstever satellite to directly observe wind profiles from space, this mission will provide muchneeded data to improve the quality of weather forecasts as well as contribute to longterm climate research.
