Whatever the threats of punitive tariffs on US apparel imports from China, the Chinese shipments have continued to rise in June, as reflected by the latest trade data released by the US Department of Commerce. US buyers seem trapped in China, with no similar capacities available outside and the ability of Chinese suppliers to lower their prices. Our monthly review covers US apparel import data, with historical trends being analyzed over the 2000-2019 period including cotton vs. man-made fiber apparel, and China vs. Vietnam and the Rest of the World (RoW). Import data are available per origin in the year-to-date, in volume, value, and unit value terms.

European clothing imports have continued recovering in May for the second consecutive month, as a clear sign that the fall of the euro is progressively digested. Chinese shipments are no more significantly falling, with the Bangladeshi origin being negatively affected by the surge of minimum wages in the country. Our report covers monthly EU clothing import data, with historical trends being analyzed, and a specific focus on China vs. Rest of World (RoW) and Bangladesh, and on knit vs. woven clothing.
