Our client, based near Frankfurt in Germany, is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. They are seeking engineering scientific consultancy support in the area of operational monitoring of the climate and the detection of global climate change. The client process satellite generated data mainly to support weather forecasting applications though the analysis of climate change enforces more stringent requirements on the data in terms of temporal coverage, accuracy and stability. The consultant they seek shall have at least 3 years experience in the implementation of software for operational or delayed mode processing of satellite instrument data and in the validation of satellite derived products. The key person should have strong technical skills with a scientific background on retrieval of parameters using visible wavelengths, e.g., surface albedo andor aerosol as well as knowledge of the visible calibration of satellite instruments. The Consultant shall have the following mandatory skills and experience Programming languages and CC and FORTRAN Scripting languages, such as Python, Perl, shell, TclTk Analysis and graphic software such as IDL Processing of remote sensing data Calibration of satellite observations in the visible spectral range Validation of satellite products Working in international projects andor environment. Desirable experience includes Structured software development documentation, testing and validation of application software in UNIX environments according to coding standards Operational product processing environments EUMETSAT Meteosat missions and instruments Retrieval of parameters using visible wave lengths. The working language is English. This is a permanent employee assignment starting in February 2015. Pactum have supplied professional recruitment services to clients throughout the UK and across continental Europe since 1988. Climate scientists worry about the costs of sea level rise

2016-03-02 12:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: As humans add greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, it not only warms the planet, but also raises the oceans. Ocean waters are rising for a number of reasons including thermal expansion of water (as water warms, it expands to a larger volume), as well as ice melt which then flows as liquid into the ocean. My next post will cover four recent studies that quantify how much ocean levels will rise in the future. However, here I will focus on the economic costs of rising seas. A paper was just published...

Climate Home: Osama bin Laden said America was better off waging a war on climate change than on Islam, according to documents made public on Tuesday. The letter was included in materials seized in a US raid on his secret compound in Pakistan in May 2011, attributed to the Al Qaeda mastermind by intelligence officials. the world should put its efforts into attempting to reduce the release of gases, read the undated, unsigned letter to an aide, Reuters reported. This is a struggle between two of the...

Second hottest February on record sparks fresh concerns over climate change

2016-03-02 06:16:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Southland Times: A scorching end to the summer has lead to New Zealand's second warmest February on record, preliminary data from Niwa shows. The country's mean temperature for the month was 19.6 degrees Celsius, second only to 1998, said Niwa forecaster Chris Brandolino. For Wellington it was the warmest February on record, also with a mean temperature of 19.6C, which is 2.4C above average for the capital. But while the weather was great for those enjoying our pools and beaches, it was concerning to climate...

EU sees current climate targets as priority after Paris deal

2016-03-02 06:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Bloomberg: The European Union should focus on enacting rules to meet existing climate targets for 2030 rather than move to stricter goals in immediate reaction to a global pollution-reduction agreement reached last year, according to the EU regulatory arm. The 28-nation bloc may consider a review of climate ambitions as a part of international talks to be held in 2023 on how to deepen greenhouse-gas reductions, the European Commission said in a policy paper published on Wednesday. Under a deal reached in...
