Scientific Programmer for the Euclid Mission Location Kapteyn Astronomical Institute httpwww.rug.nlresearchkapteyn, Groningen The Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen seeks a scientific programmer for the Euclid Netherlands Science Data Centre SDCNL httpwww.rug.nlscienceandsocietytargetnewsandeventsnewsnewslatesteuclidsdc. The SDCNL will be operated as a partnership between the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute httpwww.rug.nlresearchkapteyn and the Donald Smits Centre of Information Technology httpwww.rug.nlscienceandsocietycentreforinformationtechnology. The Euclid mission httpsci.esa.inteuclid has been selected for the Cosmic Visions Program of the European Space Agency. The primary goal of the mission is to investigate the nature of dark energy and dark matter by measuring the accelerated expansion of the universe using different independent methods. The Euclid satellite is expected to be launched in 2019 and has a mission lifetime of five years. The SDCNL is one of seven national data centres which will share the Euclid processing. The SDCNL is responsible for the development in cooperation with the European Space Astronomy Centre in Madrid of the Euclid Archive System EAS. This is a core component of the distributed Euclid Science Ground System and underpins all the Euclid processing. We seek a scientific programmer to take a major role in the development of the EAS. An EAS prototype has already been developed and is being used to support data simulations. The prototype draws heavily on the technologies used in the successful AstroWISE httpwww.astrowise.org system, which was developed for the processing of data from the OmegaCAM instrument on the Verylarge Survey Telescope VST. The Kapteyn Astronomical Institute is also the colead of the organisation unit responsible for processing the large quantity of groundbased data required by the Euclid mission. Depending on their experience, it is also possible that the scientific programmer will play a role in this task. Experience The successful candidate will have experience with Python, SQL, XML, XSD and data modeling. Experience with any of the following would be considered an advantage GridCloud computing, Workflow management systems, UML, SysML, ER, RDBMS, astronomical data processing and astronomical spatial index systems HTM, Healpix. A relevant degree e.g. Astronomy, Computer Science is required and a higher degree would be advantageous. The initial appointment is for 2 years, with the possibility of extension.
