Last week in telecoms: feeling the impact of 5G auctions and new entrants

(Telecompaper) Spectrum auctions, 5G and new entrants dominated the news in week 50. It resulted in a drop for the Telecompaper European telecoms index of 1.1 percent, versus a gain of 1.1 percent for the EuroStoxx 50 index. Polish Play (+12%) came out strongest last week, followed by Megafon (+8.1%) and Kcom (+8.0%). Three micro caps, Forthnet (-25%), Go Internet (-15%) and Tiscali (-9.4%), featured at the bottom end. The index heavy weights, Deutsche Telekom (-0.1%) and Vodafone (-1.3%), were in negative territory as well.

Last week in telecoms: a new box from Iliad as the telecoms sector starts outperforming

(Telecompaper) The European telecoms sector, as per the Telecompaper stock index, has started to outperform the broader market in week 49. Our index is down 11.5 percent year-to-date, versus -12.7 percent for the EuroStoxx 50 index. Polish Play (+18%) scored the week's highest gain and Greek Forthnet (-41%) was the weakest share. Apart from these two outliers, last week's performances moved within a relatively narrow band, ranging from +8 percent (Gamma Communications) to -14 percent (Intelsat).
Last week in telecoms: Dutch merger approval felt throughout Europe - except Finland

(Telecompaper) It may be only a slight exaggeration to say that the EC single-handedly pushed up the European telecoms sector in week 48. Its decision to allow the Dutch merger of T-Mobile and Tele2 to continue without conditions helped our index to move up by 4.0 percent, strongly outperforming the EuroStoxx 50 index (+1.1%). The year-to-date performances of both indices are now almost identical at -9.4 percent.

Last week in telecoms: Altice and KCOM weak on Q3 results, Italy in focus

(Telecompaper) Week 47 left two heavy casualties, British KCOM and Altice Europe. Italian microcap Tiscali was the week's winner. Excluding these outliers, the stocks in our European telecoms index moved within a fairly narrow range of +7 to -9 percent. Overall, our index lost 0.4 percent for the week, outperforming the EuroStoxx 50 index (-1.4%).
