EU's clothing imports have remained strong in volume terms in the fourth quarter last year whatever the rise of unit prices in euro terms. The decline of China has mostly benefited Bangladesh whereas imports from Cambodia and Vietnam were slowing down, and Indian shipments were even declining. Imports from Myanmar have continued surging, as China's clothing industry progressively relocates its production to low-cost Asian nations. Our comprehensive reports covers the 4th quarter and full 2018 per origin. A large number of statistical tables are released, with volume, value and unit value changes in both euro and US$ terms. Minimum wages have continued rising in Cambodia and Vietnam as of January 1st, however at a lower pace than in the previous years. By contrast, minimum wages have been sharply increased in Indonesia for political reasons. Minimum wages had previously surged in Myanmar and in Bangladesh with these countries however keeping their competitive advantage. Our report displays minimum wages in low-cost apparel manufacturing countries in Asia, from January 2015 to January 2019, in local currency and US$ terms. A 4-year comparison is available in local currency terms, 2015 US$ terms, and 2019 US$ terms.

Chinese shipments have plunged this year on EU's clothing import market, with rival countries taking advantage of this historical decline. Bangladesh is the more obvious winner, now ranking first in many HS 4-digit categories, but other origins are also benefiting from the shift our of China, mostly due to their duty-free access to the European Union. Morocco and Tunisia have taken advantage of their proximity, whereas Turkey is seizing opportunities offered by free access, proximity and a sharply lower currency.
