Borough President James Oddo brought his anti-litter campaign to Staten Island's future leaders Thursday, unveiling a public-private partnership to educate students at 10 pilot schools here through a pro-recycling, anti-litter, hands-on classroom curriculum. The initiative is a partnership between: Pratt Industries and its recycling plant in Travis; the Insitute for Scrap Recycling Industries ; the city's Department of Education; the Sanitation Department; Grow NYC, and Jason Learning.

Group wants to bring back Native Hawaiian burial traditions

A group of Native Hawaiians wants to bring back a centuries-old island burial practice that it says is more environmentally friendly than some modern interment methods. Traditional "clean burials" involve cleansing the deceased by fire in a pit and then compressing the skeletal remains, wrapping them in a cloth woven from trees, and burying them in a basket.

A spring recycling event will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 18 at 1350 E. Keating Ave. The event is free to Muskegon County residents. Business waste and house hold trash are not accepted, but residents may recycle many items that would otherwise be hard to dispose of properly.
