Vimpelcom underlying sales up 4% in Q1, EBITDA 2% higher

(Telecompaper) Vimpelcom reported a small improvement in underlying results in the first quarter, with revenues up 4 percent and EBITDA growing 2 percent on an organic basis. However, negative currency effects and weak conditions in many of its markets, especially Russia and Kazakhstan, led to a 12 percent drop in reported revenue to USD 2.023 billion. Adjusted EBITDA fell 15 percent to USD 799 million, hurt also by USD 40 million in restructuring charges, and the margin was down 1.4 percent points year-on-year to 39.5 percent. Vimpelcom classified its Italian unit Wind as a discontinued activity held for sale, leading to a net profit from continuing activities of USD 38 million versus a loss of USD 88 million a year ago.

Orange grows underlying revenue 0.6% in Q1

(Telecompaper) Orange reported a third consecutive quarter of revenue growth in Q1, driven by improving results in Spain, Belgium and Africa. Reveneus for the three months totalled EUR 10.009 billion, up 0.6 percent on a comparable basis and 3.5 percent higher on a reported basis. Orange reported adjusted EBITDA down 1.6 percent on a comparable basis to EUR 2.569 billion. Excluding the impact of an employee shares programme, Orange said the result was up 0.3 percent. The company maintained its outlook for growth in full-year EBITDA. Capital expenditure rose 10.4 percent year-on-year to EUR 1.457 billion or 14.6 percent of revenue, in line with the increased investment planned under the Essentiels2020 programme.
