Red Hat to take on Microsoft with .Net hosted service

Challenging Microsoft's Windows Azure on its own turf, Red Hat is ramping up services that would offer Microsoft .Net and SQL Server capabilities on its OpenShift PaaS (platform as a service). Code to enable the Microsoft services is being provided by Uhuru Software, a company started by a number of former Microsoft executives and engineers that specializes in rendering Microsoft software as cloud services.

RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) is now available on Amazon Web Services' GovCloud, an isolated part of Amazon's cloud designed for U.S. government agencies. GovCloud lets U.S. government users run sensitive workloads by addressing their specific regulatory and compliance requirements, according to Amazon.

Red Hat polishes business process management suite

Thanks to its 2012 acquisition of Polymita, Red Hat has added major functionality to its software suite for managing business processes, making the package an appealing choice in the enterprise market for BPM (business process management) software. "Rather than building this stuff ourselves, we were able to leverage the technology from Polymita and bring this to market sooner," said Phil Simpson, Red Hat principal product marketing manager, of the new release of Red Hat JBoss BPM Suite 6. "Polymita brought a lot of technology that was very business-user friendly."

Dell, Red Hat team up on network virtualization

Dell is teaming up with Red Hat to drive its effort to be a force in the burgeoning area of network function virtualization (NFV) technology, aimed at helping carriers reduce costs and quickly roll out new services. Co-engineered Dell-Red Hat OpenStack-based NFV and SDN (software defined networking) applications are expected to be available in 2014, Dell said.

Alcatel-Lucent is betting big on operators wanting to virtualize their mobile networks using NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) technology, in order to become more nimble and less reliant on proprietary hardware. Virtualization has already changed how enterprises build and manage their IT infrastructure, and now mobile operators are looking at doing the same thing, and vendors are re-architecting their products. Purported advantages include lower costs and faster deployment of new services.
