HBO Now reaches 800,000 subscribers
2016-02-11 09:03:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) HBO Now has attracted 800,000 paying subscribers since the standalone streaming TV service launched in April last year. The figure was announced by HBO Chief Richard Plepler in a conference call on parent company Time Warner's annual results. Pieper said growth should increase as the service is expanded to more distribution platforms, noting that Now is not yet available on Playstation and Xbox. For HBO Go, the on-demand service offered with the premium channel, those platforms account for 20 percent of viewing. HBO Now first launched on Apple devices and with cable operator Cablevision and has since spread to more platforms like Amazon and Android devices. Overall, the HBO and Cinemax channels added 2.7 million subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2015, including HBO Now.

HBO planning to launch Spain standalone streaming service
2016-01-19 08:46:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) HBO is finalising plans to launch a standalone video streaming service in Spain by the end of the year, reports Bloomberg, citing HBO CEO Richard Plepler. Although piracy is very common in Spain, the country also has high levels of broadband-only homes without a pay-TV subscription. HBO will retain the exclusive rights to its shows for its streaming service and will no longer license its programming to pay-TV services in the country, said the report, with Plepler suggesting it can make even more money long-term by offering its own streaming service. "We follow the money. We're making a determination of where we think the most profits lie," he said.

"Factory Man," which tells the story of the Bassett family, is described by Deadline as such: "Throughout much of the 20th century, generations of the family oversaw the rise of their furniture manufacturing company, Bassett Furniture, the biggest employer in their Virginia hometown. But with the onset of the 21st century, global capitalism threatened the future of the company, and the family scion, John Bassett III, was forced to take on China - as well as his own industry - in order to keep his family's legacy alive."
