Tasks and Activities The successful candidate shall be expected to Contribute to procedure writing and the implementation of those procedures Follow procedures and operate Gaia SOC systems Test SOC systems for the daily processing of raw Gaia data Test SOC systems for the generation of payload operations request Further test and scale SOC products such as MDB Participate in the optimisation of software processing Gather operational constraints for software running at SOC Interact appropriately with and support the providers of all software SOC systems Interact appropriately with the users of DPCE data products and other Data Processing Centres Assist in automation of SOC procedures nominally Gaia SOC will only be manned normal working hours. DUTIES Under the direct authority of the Director of HSO, the Head of Department is responsible for defining the ESA programme for scientific research under space conditions and its programmatic management. This will include defining objectives for research under space conditions and related activities for human exploration responsibility for the budget of the various scientific elements of the Directorates scientific utilisation programmes overall management and coordination of approved programmes in the Life and Physical Sciences, including planning and supervision of endtoend implementation of the European ISS Utilisation Programme in coordination with the wide spectrum of user communities, defining and fostering the European strategy for scientific research under space conditions onboard ISS and future platforms, based on preparatory studies and assessment of experimental results programmatic supervision of delegated implementation of all activities related to research hardware development and execution of research onboard ISS coordinating and implementing all shortduration autonomous mission platforms and ground analogues representing the respective ESA programmes in programme boards PBHME and the Exploration Utilisation Board EUB representing ESA on multilateral ISS coordination panels and boards dealing with utilisation matters e.g. UOP, MRICB RPWG, PSF and providing support to ISS system coordination panels SSPCB, SOP, SSCB, MCB contributing to reinforcing the EAC and promoting human spaceflight and research in space among stakeholders and the general public. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for this post should have a PhD in Science or Engineering together with experience of programme management functions. Knowledge of processes and challenges specifically related to science management, human spaceflight and space hardware development is necessary. They should have highlevel negotiating and communication skills, plus a proven capability to establish personal contacts at all levels. Sound knowledge of the space programmes of other national and international agencies would be an asset. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required together with a working knowledge of the other or German. Good complementary knowledge of Russian would be an asset.
