Union appeals 2014 DEQ fine

The City of Union is appealing a fine levied by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for a small amount of chlorine released into Catherine Creek in 2014. The city has been fined $3,600 for the discharge, which the DEQ describes as a Class I violation, according to Rod McKee, the City of Union's public works director.

DEQ Proposes 361K Penalty Against CSX For James River Tanker Fire

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has proposed a consent order in response to the derailment of a rail car that caught fire in the James River in Lynchburg in April of last year. The order imposes a $361,000 civil charge against tanker car owner CSX Transportation Inc. An investigation by DEQ and CSX determined that of the more than 29,000 gallons of crude oil in the breached tanker, approximately 98 percent was consumed in the fire.

Mich. DEQ awards scrap tire cleanup grants

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has awarded 48 grants worth a total of $587,000 to fund community scrap tire drop-offs and other scrap tire cleanups across the state. "As part of an ongoing effort to prevent the illegal dumping of scrap tires, these community events will provide affordable, convenient tire recycling opportunities to residents," The agency said.
