Gov. Steve Bullock has appointed a longtime employee of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality to be the next director of the agency. Tom Livers has worked at the Montana DEQ since its creation in the 1990s and has been deputy director for 12 years.

People packed a meeting Friday in Linden looking for answers on a gas smell that's been lingering for months. Tests were done over the summer after the smell popped up in basements of some downtown businesses.

DEQ unveils tool to track chemical storage sites

The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality is unveiling a new online tool for the public to locate chemical storage sites. Using the new tool, residents can find oil and gas wells, cell towers that have large acid batteries, water plants, manufacturing facilities and other sites that are required to report storage information to DEQ.

DEQ sued over transfer of wastewater permit

The Department of Environmental Quality is being sued over its decision to transfer a Clark Fork River wastewater discharge permit from a now-defunct pulp and paper operation to the buyer of the property, which hasn't stated any concrete plans for its use. The Missoulian reports the Missoula City-County Health Board, the Missoula Valley Water Quality District, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the Clark Fork Coalition filed the lawsuit against the DEQ in District Court in Helena this week.

DEQ letter: Acme Meijer site developer violated permit with East Bay silt plumes

State regulators have handed out a violation notice to developers of a Meijer Inc.-anchored construction site that sent " unprecedented " amounts of clay-laden silt runoff into East Grand Traverse Bay this fall. The letter sent this week to Ohio developer Jeffrey R. Anderson is the first step in state environmental enforcement that could result in fines or court action if sediment runoff from the 140-acre construction site in Grand Traverse County isn't halted.
