DEQ fines Battin Power in Milwaukie; company appeals

Milwaukie-based generator sales and service business Battin Power, 5004 S.E. Johnson Creek Blvd., this month appealed its penalties from the state for alleged water-quality violations. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality fined Battin Power Inc. $4,151 for using a drywell to dispose of stormwater and wastewater from engine washing at its facility without DEQ As first reported by the Johnson Creek Watershed Council to the city of Milwaukie, Battin Power has been in violation of DEQ regulations since at least April 2013.

Nebraska DEQ awards grant money

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Acting Director Pat Rice has announced that $2,099,364 in grants for litter cleanup, recycling and public education programs and activities has been awarded to 57 recipients in the state. Money for the grants comes from a fee charged to certain manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers that commonly contribute to litter, the DEQ says.

Edwards named DEQ Deputy

The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality named a new deputy director late Friday afternoon, as Alan Edwards was named to the post. Edwards will add the deputy title to his current duties as administrator for the Abandoned Mine Lands Division at DEQ.

Michigan DEQ offers recycling grants

Companies exposed public to asbestos fibers, DEQ says

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued two fines after a contractor hired an unlicensed asbestos abatement company for a Southeast Portland home project. DEQ, which concluded the project likely caused the release of asbestos fibers into the air, fined Classic Image Homes $9,529 for allowing VIP Construction to perform asbestos abatement at a home on 3431 S.E. Rex St. VIP, an unlicensed subcontractor, was fined $11,200 for doing the project without a license from DEQ.
