Atmospheric Aerosol Product Development Scientist

Position Reference 864 We are currently looking for an Atmospheric Aerosol Product Development Scientist to support our team, and specifically in the development of the new mission CO2M. This role will be based in our clients premises in the city of Darmstadt, Germany. Summary Project consist in conducting activities for the development and maintenance of prototypes devoted to atmospheric products and specifically on Copernicus Carbon Dioxide Monitoring mission, on the MAP polarimeter, and for the generation of test data sets for the need of the program developments. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Contribution to the scientific definition of the aerosol algorithm and product Contribute to the definition of the Calibration Validation plan. Support the development of Level1 prototype, and level2 Aerosol prototype. Support instrument performance definition and assessment. TDS generation for the need of consolidation of mission requirements and prototypes. Participate to RSP studies and progress meetings through review of scientific content. Update, maintenance and verification of an operational processor for multisensor satellite retrievals of aerosol optical properties from Metop data. Supporting the validation of aerosol products from EPS and the compilation of the relevant product validation reports. Contributing to the update of the product specification and algorithm specification for multisensor satellite retrievals of aerosol optical properties from Metop. Reporting anomalies in aerosol product services, contribute to their diagnosis and track their resolution. Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory University degree Master or Phd in a relevant discipline. Demonstrated skills in Java programming, or on another programming language e.g. C, Fortran. Experience or contribution to an EO or atmospheric monitoring scientific study. Experience of operational satellite data processing systems. Experience on the visualisation of remote sensing data using specific tools or programming languages Python, IDL. Excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills. Communication skills, especially through scientific peerreview papers, international working groups and workshops. Fluency in English, both written and spoken. The following skills are considered as interesting assets Previous experience on CO2M mission, and specifically on MAP polarimeter. Demonstrated knowledge of physics of optical remote sensing of atmosphere, especially for cloud andor aerosol properties, including experience in the use of radiative transfer models. Experience with the development of modular, clearly readable and adaptable scientific software is required, including the configuration control of the developed codes. Experience in scientific analysis, especially on remote sensing of cloud or atmosphere from space, including the experience of prototyping algorithms or any related testing functions. Knowledge of the most relevant imagery missions for atmospheric products, including their products, and applications. Experience on the maintenance of processors in the context of operational missions. Knowledge on instrument calibration and characterisation including longterm monitoring and validation of the performance. Knowledge of the functioning, operation, and data processing of multiviewing, multipolarisation, multispectral imaging instruments, or any similar polarimetric mission. Experience on the validation of aerosol parameters derived from spaceborne sensors through insitu measurements and crosscomparisons. These are the Meteosat Third Generation MTG, the EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation EPSSG programs as well as the Sentinel3 Copernicus program. This position is based at EUMETSAT in Darmstadt. ResponsibilitiesDuties Your principal task will be the continuous development of geophysical products level 2 in the Technical Computing Environment TCE supporting the Remote Sensing and Product Division. In the TCE facility different cloud and aerosol products are prototyped in order to prepare the operational implementation on ground segments where they will be continuously generated and disseminated in near real time to the user community. You will be primarily in charge of the software that generates the aerosol retrieval from the simultaneous Surface and Aerosol Retrieval approach SAR. One of these technics the GRASP has to be implemented to support testing and adaptation for future operations. Additionally a strong involvement in the general work on aerosol processors and products of the Sentinel3 mission will fulfill your daily work. QualificationsExperience What are we looking for? Maybe for you, with at least a University degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics or related subjects. With your 3 years of experience in of processing satellite or meteorological data. Of course, you are easily understanding the relating physics processes in such satellite instruments. Essential Skills You are daily working with Python in a LinuxUnix environment and the latest software development tools and methods are your daily business. We dont have to tell you about NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, and other libraries. You have already gained a lot of experience with representing scientific data for Earth Observation application with Python. Furthermore, you have proven experience in the design, implementation, and testing of complex scientific algorithm software CC and Fortran in a UNIX environment. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their experience in the use of radiative transfer models and have previously developed software that involved an interaction with user communities.
