Apparent slowing of sea level rise is artefact of satellite data
2015-05-11 20:47:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New Scientist: A slowdown in rising sea levels recorded over the past decade is down to a measurement error. In fact, sea levels are rising more quickly than ever. Over the past century, the sea level has risen by around 0.2 metres, and it has been rising faster and faster. However, this trend got murky over the past decade, with satellite data suggesting that the sea level has risen slightly more slowly in the past decade than in the previous one. That would be good news if true. Yet the result was odd...
Earth's cloudy demeanour unveiled by NASA's Aqua satellite
2015-05-11 20:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
New Scientist: Waiting for the sun to come out? It might be unwise to hold your breath. Earth is generally a cloudy place, according to this map. NASA's Aqua satellite has built up this average view of Earth's surface by monitoring global cloud cover every day since 2002. Cloud-free areas are dark blue, lighter shades represent more cloud cover, and the most overcast areas are white. The map reveals three particularly cloudy bands. A white strip runs close to the equator while two wider bands run roughly...

STMicroelectronics unveils first 500Mbaud HSR satellite chip
2015-05-05 09:15:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) STMicroelectronics has unveiled what it says is the world's first 500Mbaud High-Symbol-Rate (HSR) satellite demodulator chip, with data throughput of up to Mbps in the Ka band. The STiD135 will enable significantly more efficient bandwidth usage and increased throughput for satellite internet when deployed with transponders aimed at using higher frequency bands to send data via Ka-band communication satellites. The chip is compliant with DVB-S2, DVB-S2X and DVB-S2 Annex-M, and was designed as part of the French Space Agency (CNES) THD-SAT programme. The programme itself looked how it could develop cost-efficient, fast broadband internet access via High Throughput Satellite (HTS) at a performance equivalent to fibre-optic, ADSL, and 4G networks, taking advantage of the universal accessibility of satellite signals. CNES said its goal with THD-SAT is to bring a 10-fold cost reduction of bandwidth with High-Throughput Ka-band Satellite to distribute fast internet services at 100/10 Mbps downlink/uplink, complementing FTTH deployment outside densely populated areas. The STiD135 is currently sampling and will be demonstrated during SES-Astra Industry Days on 6-7 May in Luxembourg.
