Flight simulator-maker CAE planning 350 layoffs, mostly in Montreal

CAE Inc. is planning to cut 350 people out of its global workforce over the coming year, mostly in Montreal where the company has its head office and largest production facility. The job cuts -- representing about four per cent of its 8,000 employees -- are part of efforts by the flight simulator and training company to improve its production processes and revamp its business focus.

Action Item: Until there is appellate resolution of the preemptive effect of the Montreal Convention, airlines sued in state court over damages allegedly arising during the course of international transportation should contact an experienced aviation attorney immediately to discuss whether the case should be removed to federal court based upon federal question jurisdiction, and determine the best arguments to be made in support of complete federal preemption under the Convention. On June 18, 2015, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania held for the third time that "the Montreal Convention preempts all state law claims within its scope."

Enbridge shippers question regulator's delay of pipeline to Montreal

The two biggest customers on Enbridge Inc's newly reversed pipeline to carry Western Canadian oil from Sarnia, Ontario, to Montreal want to meet Canada's energy regulator to find out why the pipeline's opening has been delayed by months. Valero Energy Corp and Suncor Energy Inc, each of which owns of two refineries in the province of Quebec, said in separate letters posted on the National Energy Board's website that the delay in approving the startup of the 300,000 barrel per day Line 9 pipeline is pushing up their costs and harming their operations.
