For the location in Darmstadt Germany we are looking for a Copernicus Climate Change Service Reprocessing Engineer to work at EUMETSAT. Tasks The overall goal of EUMETSAT supporting the operational monitoring of climate and the detection of global climate change is to provide consistent data records with sufficient quality to be used for climate services and science by Member States and scientific institutions worldwide. EUMETSAT has a Climate Service team that has the capability to generate high quality CDRs utilising a dedicated and adequate processing infrastructure that ensures the efficient generation and scientific quality evaluation of data records from its own and several third party satellite instruments. Copernicus is the European Unions flagship Earthobservation programme created to achieve operational monitoring of the atmosphere, oceans, and continental surfaces. It aims to provide reliable, validated information services for a range of environmental and security applications. The European Commission has appointed the European Centre for MediumRange Weather Forecasts www.ecmwf.int to implement the Copernicus Climate Change and Atmosphere Monitoring Services. The Copernicus Climate Change Service C3S responds to environmental and societal challenges associated with climate changes. The service will give access to information for monitoring and predicting climate change and will, therefore, help to support adaptation and mitigation. It benefits from a sustained network of in situ and satellitebased observations, reanalysis of the Earth climate and modelling scenarios, based on a variety of climate projections. The tasks of the key persons will be carried out mainly at EUMETSAT facilities in Darmstadt, but occasional travel within Europe is likely to be required for project progress meetings. The tasks of the key persons will include Implementation, maintenance and operation of Data processing systems operational processors and processing chains for the generation of climate data records for C3S that can handle data from satellites in geostationary and polar orbit Automated climate product quality monitoringvalidation tools taking benefit of existing operational tools Databases used for the data record generation and product monitoringvalidation Test, verification and validation of operational processors and processing chains implemented in the operational climate data processing infrastructure Porting of prototype software, e.g., from IDL into CFortran or Python Acquisition of relevant data from internal and external sources to support product quality monitoring Support to the analysis of the data record quality employing quality monitoring procedures and other validation techniques and data as appropriate Preparation of data records for the submission to the C3S CDS and ingestion into the EUMETSAT Data Centre Compilation of technical documentation of the operational processors, processing chains and data formats. Essential requirements The key person shall have a University degree in a relevant computer or natural science subject. The key person shall have indepth knowledge and proven experience in Software engineering for data processing involving large data volumes, preferably for satellite data, including product validation Programming using CC andor Fortran 95 and higher programming languages as well as scripting languages, such as Python, Perl, Shell UnixLinux environments Use and administration of data bases such as Oracle and MySQL Data formats such as NetCDF4, HDF5, GRIB, BUFR and the decoding of binary data formats Familiarity with operational procedures for software verification and validation. Strengths in analysis, synthesis and presentation of results Excellent technical writing skills Excellent interpersonal, communication and team working skills. Desirable requirements Experience in the following would be a distinct advantage Use of satellite data for climate monitoring Measurement uncertainty analysis principles and methods.
