A Descent Module Control and Data Management Systems Engineer is required with several years of engineering experience in the design and development of spacecraft structures and subsystems needed to survive the EDL phase of a planetary mission. The Key Person shall be responsible for system engineering tasks related to the complex procedures and closedloop feedback systems required to guide a planetary lander through entry, descent and landing. In this area of work, the tasks will typically include Requirements and function definition Interface specification and control Design trades and documentation Resource, margin and risk management Verification and validation In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline, the Consultant should have as a prerequisite Several years of professional experience in control and data management systems Understanding of EDL procedures and requirements for interplanetary missions Applied systems engineering knowledge in one or more of the following fields propulsion, mechanical, thermal, power, telecommunications and avionics Heat shield design and parachute deployment Excellent conceptual and analytical skills Working knowledge and experience in the following areas would be considered an advantage Handson experience in space system integration and testing Surface detection radar systems Landing thruster control systems and airbag deployment Knowledge of the design and development lifecycle of science missions and payloads Working in an international framework The Key Person shall have good communications skills, to allow the effective communication of information under a variety of circumstances. Heshe should be used to working proactively within a small team, being able to work with the minimum of supervision. The variety of the tasks and the scope and complexity of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. The ability to perform under very high workloads and adapt to a rapidly changing environment is essential, conducting all activities in an orderly and disciplined manner and working calmly and correctly under stress. While the official languages of ESA are English and French, the working language for the position is English and therefore Key Person must be able to work effectively in this language.
