This position, in a scientific organisation based near Munich in Germany, calls for experience of developing astronomical data reduction applications in ISO C99. The main working language is English. The role will involve developing data reduction pipelines for operational instruments for the quicklook assessment of data, the healthmonitoring of instruments and detectors, the generation of master calibration data, the reduction of scientific exposures, and data quality control. The work involves the preparation of data reduction procedures with implementation in ISO C99. The key experience and attributes sought are Development of astronomical data reduction applications in ISO C99 A good working knowledge of the scripting languages Python and optionally Perl Familiarity with Linux Expertise with modern software engineering practices and tools, including SVN, GNU autotools, unit and regression testing Familiarity with the continuous integration tool Jenkins Familiarity with packaging for systems installation such as RPM or MacPorts Experience of the complete software lifecycle Expertise in image and signal processing methods Experience of statistical handling of scientific data Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous Data reduction recipes based on CPL Astronomical data reduction methods and observational techniques The ESO Reflex environment Virtualisation eg via VMware, VirtualBox or Vagrant Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent. Fluency in English is essential. This is a freelance contract assignment with an initial period of 3 years starting in January 2016 with an option to extend for a further two years.
