Main responsibilities Within the ESA Sensors Performance, Products and Algorithms SPPA Section the postholder will be included in the Swarm Data Innovation and Science Cluster DISC contractual framework. The postholder will be responsible for the data quality of the Swarm Electric Field Instrument EFI composed by a Thermal Ion Imager TII and two Langmuir Probes LP. The required expertise shall be related to the measurement of ionospheric plasma parameters electric field, ion velocity and temperature, electron density and temperature, the related instruments Langmuir probes, thermal ion imagers, electrostatic analyzers, the algorithms and theory underneath the processing of data. Expertise on related scientific research and also on the utilisation of ground based equipment for plasma measurements both Incoherent and Coherent Scatter Radars, Ionosondes and Digisondes, AllSky Cameras would also be valuable. The main activities will consist in a Coordination of the algorithms maintenance and evolution with the scientific teams b Consolidation of the operational processor with the software developer and Payload Data Ground Segment PDGS c Assessment of product data quality d Investigation of data anomalies and coordination of related activities e.g. onboard instrument tests. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES The Swarm Instruments Performance and Product Quality specialist will perform the following activities, responding to the DISC Service Manager 1. Support the coordination between the Expert Support Laboratories ESL of the DISC, the data processors software maintainers and the ESA PDGS concerning Coordination of the Electric Field Instrument Quality Working Group QWG on instrument performance, data quality and product validation. Support in the technical preparation and chairing of the Swarm Data Quality Workshops and other major scientific events organized by the ESA SPPA Section and Swarm DISC. Support the SDBR Swarm DISC Board of Representatives decisional processes, by reviewing documentation as requested. Follow the improvements and upgrades of the data processors, that could result from outcomes of the QWGs, anomaly investigations and bugs reported by data users. Support to Instrument Processing Facilities IPF operations, upgrades verification plan definition, execution and reporting, improvement, IPF anomaly investigation and configuration. Swarm Characterization and Calibration Data Base CCDB updates and configuration control a Followup of CCDB changes within the ESL and ESA PostLaunch Support Office b Handle CCDB changes in operations following the existing procedures, or adaptingupdating the procedures for particular needs c Support in the operations, test and debugging of the CCDB tool used for operational CCDB changes and configuration control. 2. Perform product quality monitoring activities and provide Mission sensors scientific technical support. More specifically Operations of the Quality Control QC tools for systematic and onrequest product quality analysis and reporting. Define improvements of the QC tools as needed. Support in the QC tools software verification and validation. Coordination for related anomaly investigations and resolution. Processing and Quality Control software verification plan definition, execution and reporting. WeeklyCyclic Reports compilation. Support to data reprocessing campaigns dataset definition, analysis of reprocessed data. Development of adhoc data analysis routines if needed. Interface with the New Products Integration Specialist to recommend Swarm products improvement ideas. 3. On demand support to other ESA interfaces PDGS, EOPS, Post Launch Support Office, to other entities inside DISC, and for general users requests via ESA Earth Observation Help Desk. 4. Handling the technical communication on data quality towards the science users issuing of web notesnews about the mission, writing and updating dedicated web pages detailing the characteristics and quality of the Swarm products. 5. Prepare scientific documentation posters for workshops or conferences as agreed within the DISC and with ESA. Ideal candidate Additional assets Expertise in testing software, data flows and interfaces. Programming skills IDL and MathLab preferentially, other programming languages and scripting Linux. Experience of an ESA mission exploitation phases. Low Earth Orbiting space missions concept precise orbit determination and assessment, GPS signal processing, accelerometers data processing and analysis. Experience on the products, algorithms and applications related to Swarm onboard instruments. In particular o the Electric Field Instrument EFI, composed by a Thermal Ion Imager TII and two Langmuir Probes LP. Good knowledge of ESA Standards.
