Interests along the coast of North Carolina should monitor the progress of this system. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 PM EDT (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Chris was located by an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft to be near latitude 32.2 North, longitude 74.4 West. Chris has remained nearly stationary the past several hours, and little motion is expected during the next day or so. A northeastward motion should begin by late Tuesday, and Chris is forecast to accelerate northeastward on Wednesday and Thursday. Reports from the reconnaissance aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds have increased to near 70 mph (110 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is expected during the next couple of days, and Chris is forecast to become a hurricane later tonight or Tuesday morning. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure based on data from the Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is 996 mb (29.42 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Chris are expected to increase and affect portions of the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states during the next few days. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local weather office.
