EUMETSAT, based in Germany, is looking for a UVNS Product Development Engineer to work within the Remote Sensing and Products RSP Division of the Technical and Scientific Support TSS Department and provide support as a member of the Atmospheric Composition AC Team. The responsibilities will primarily cover the support for the generation of Level 2 data processing, product format, and auxiliary data specifications for the UVNS mission. In addition the post will support the review of calibration algorithms and contribute to development activities related to Level 1 data processing software. Development of prototype software and preparation of associated documentation will be another focus area. The submission deadline for applicants is 22nd February 2015. Tasks Provision of support for the generation of Level 2 data processing, product format, and auxiliary data specifications for the UVNS mission. Provision of support to the development of algorithms for the calibration of UVNS Level 0 data. Development of prototype software for the purposes of testing and validation of the algorithms developed, including the generation of associated technical reports etc. Analyse the constraints imposed by the implementation of the products within an operational processing environment on the algorithm and implement necessary changes. Interfacing with experts across EUMETSAT as needed. Collaboration with expert groups and the wider scientific community outside EUMETSAT as appropriate. In addition the key person will provide support to Assessment of results from scientific studies. Refinement of mission requirements in response to expert advice and results of scientific studies. Scientific assessments related to requirements refinements. Interaction with expert teams and the conduct of expert team meetings. Participation in reviews. Qualifications University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Experience Familiar with Level 2 retrieval algorithms, data processing, and satellite instrument characteristics in the UV to SWIR part of the spectrum. The ability to write concise and comprehensive scientific and technical reports. A minimum of 5 years experience in the field of remote sensing product retrievals, data processing, and analysis. A solid background in software engineering. The ability to write concise and comprehensive documents. Good English skills are essential. Specifically the key person shall have Experience in atmospheric remote sensing in the optical spectrum Ultraviolet to Shortwave Infrared. Familiarity with Earth observation systems in operational meteorology, atmospheric composition and climate monitoring both remote sensing and in situ systems. Handling and processing of remote sensing data. Experience with instrument calibration and characterisation. Familiarity with radiative transfer. Good skills in a higher programming language e.g. Fortran, C. The following areas of expertise would be an advantage Quality control of satellite data and products. Operational product processing environments. Software build environments and tools e.g. make, imake, eclipse, insure. Source code control system e.g. git or SVN. About the future UVNS mission to be flown on the EUMETSAT Polar System EPSSG The UVNS is a hyperspectral sounding mission with a spectral resolution from 0.05 to 1 nm within the spectral range from 0.27 to 2.4 m at a nominal spatial sampling of 7 km and 43 km in the UV1a band, respectively. Nadir sounding measurements in the UVVisNIR region have been demonstrated to yield information on a number of trace species relevant to air quality issues e.g. ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, formaldehyde, and glyoxal. Of particular relevance to these applications areas is the capability to probe the boundary layer, which is largely determined by the number of cloudfree pixels. Addition of bands in the SWIR also offers potential for improved discrimination of methane and carbon monoxide. The current target products for the UVNS mission are Ozone stratospheric vertical profile Ozone tropospheric column Ozone total column Nitrogen dioxide total column Nitrogen dioxide tropospheric column Sulphur dioxide total column and height Formaldehyde total column Methane total column Carbon monoxide total column UV spectrally resolved irradiance at surface and UV index Glyoxal total column Cloud fraction Cloud effective optical depth Cloud effective height Aerosol UV absorbing index Aerosol layer height Surface albedo The UVNS mission will be implemented via the LEO part of the Copernicus Sentinel45 System, as provided by EC and ESA. UVNS is specified and developed in the context of an ESA programme. The respective mission requirements up to level 1 and some requirements at level 2 are owned by ESA.
