EU Clothing Imports in 1st Quarter 2019: Categories (Quarterly Report)

EU's clothing imports have stabilized in volume terms in both knit and woven clothing categories in the first quarter, from a year earlier. The fall of the euro has depressed demand after unit prices have rebounded, as a result. The market has slightly risen in most categories over the past 5-year period, in volume terms, however falling in US$ terms. Statistical tables are published with volume, value and unit value changes in euro and US$ terms, covering 61 and 62 HS chapters (knit and woven clothing). The full tables are also available for download with 5-year historical data from 1st quarter 2014-19.

Cotton Prices on International and Domestic Markets (Weekly Report)

Cotton prices were in free fall at the start of the new week on the international market, as a result of latest threats by president Trump to apply additional tariffs on Mexican products. Although cotton prices should now firm up as the latest crop is drying up, political disruption may depress the cotton market at any time, negatively affecting anticipations of the global supply chain. Our weekly cotton report covers the international futures market in New York and China, and the physical indicator "A Index". Australia's apparel imports have continued rising in the last two years, with China keeping a very strong share of the market, although slightly down in the past 5 years. The duty-free access offered since last January should support demand for Chinese apparel whereas imports from Vietnam should further surge through implementation of the CPTPP as of January this year also.
