Chief Engineer, Modem Platform Architecture Luxembourg Betzdorf Role description summary The Senior Engineer Modem System Architecture for O3b mPOWER is responsible to define the system requirements and the technical roadmap for the next generation O3b mPOWER and GEO satellite link modem platforms. These requirements are closely coordinated with the SES Product team the end customer requirements. Furthermore, the goal of the SES architecture definition is to maintain the overall company strategy to define an open platform for multiple satellite modem systems while at the same time converge on critical interfaces to enable end to end system optimization methodologies to be implemented. The Senior Engineer Modem System Architecture will be responsible for all market segments, Mobile and Fixed terminals. Primary responsibilities Key result areas Define Modem Platform Architecture for MEO and GEO systems Interface with Modem vendors and terminal vendors to align requirements and prioritize developments Define technical roadmap for the Modem Platforms Interface with commercial and sales colleagues to identify and priorities customer requirements and define technical requirements Analyze state of the art Modem platform architecture requirements and derive improvement plans for increased efficiency and operational requirements Align the Modem Platform requirements to the overall system requirements of an integrated MEOGEO system fleet access capabilities Act as key interface between SES and the contracted equipment vendors, Modem platform vendors, terminal and adjacent system vendors Define operational plans and operational procedures to operate communication systems end to end service in an efficient and reliable manner Support modem platform integration with user terminals ,gateways and Adaptative resource controller. Qualifications Experience Masters degree or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or similar related scientificengineering fields. At least 10 years of experience in the satellite communication industry and of which at least 5 years of experience developing satellite communication systems and designing communication systems 20 years for Principal Engineer level and proven experience of leading a team to develop communication system development teams Essential experience Proven knowledge of satellite communication systems development Proven experience of DVBS2S2X and DVBRCS2 standards Experience with software development for real time systems Experience with integration and testing of modem systems Experience with satellite system architecture definition and concept of operations of communication satellite systems Proven development experience with either RF or analogue or digital electronics Highly desirable experience several of the following Software Quality assurance and management experience Experience with Software development for real time systems of Modem systems Experience designing, implementing critical communication systems Experience with Agile methodologies for software development Experience with GIT andor BitBucket, SVN, JIRA Experience with Integrated Development Environment IDE ie Eclipse, Visual Studio, etc Experience in utilities programming, debuggers and testing and debugging techniques Experience with virtualization techniques and operating systems for operationally critical infrastructure Experience with VHDL development environments Experience with unit testing and automated testing of real time software Proven work attitude Able to work independently with high level objectives and longterm goals Highly motivated and ability to set priorities and to work under tight deadlines towards a longterm objective Work autonomously and independently, taking initiatives if required as well as proven ability to work as a team player Easiness to communicate at all levels and excellent communication and presentation skills to communicate clearly objectives to technical and nontechnical audiences Other key requirements comments Work with cross discipline teams satellite experts, sales, business experts, etc. Ability to explain complex concepts to nontechnical stakeholders Work on an iterative basis with stakeholders during design and prototyping Relentless focus on collaboration and teamwork Work with remote management and team members Proven mindset of helping others to succeedmentoring Excellent written and verbal communication skills Commitment to deadlines and willingness to meet tight development schedules Fluent in English, other languages are beneficial Domestic and international travel required occasionally Must be either EU Citizen or eligible to work in the EU Whats in it for you? Chief Engineer, Gateway System Architecture United States Manassas, Virginia Your Role The Principal Engineer, Gateway System Architecture is a key leader in the SES Gateway System Architecture team providing technical leadership and expertise in the areas of gateway and baseband systems development. The primary objective is to ensure SES customers have the highest quality gateway architecture to provide the solid operational foundation to exceed the customers system performance requirements. The SES Gateway System Architecture team works in a dynamic environment and is looking for forward thinking individuals to help develop the next generation of gateway systems. Your Responsibilities Responsible for taking the lead role in developing and deploying complex gateway systems into to the operational network. This includes o Defining the gateway system requirements and product definition o Lead the design, optimization, implementation, and validation of the system o Develop analysis tools to test the system in a lab environment or in operation o Identify the crossfunctional interfaces to the system and verify interface functionality Serve as project leader on selected largescale antenna, baseband and network improvement projects. o Interfacing with Customer Team to define the antenna infrastructure for data centers o Responsible for procurement and deployment of gateway systems as it pertains to project o Responsible for delivery of procedures to Operations for supporting antenna infrastructure o Main point of contact for Customer to support Customer meetings, software design and development, and document all requirements Responsible for leading system engineering design and trade analyses in collaboration with third party vendors and partners Responsible for the technical architecture of the Monitoring and Control MC and Scheduling platform across all SES gateways and the integration into the Network Operation Center Responsible for procedure development to support SES Operations Responsible to developing test procedures and scripts to ensure new architectures are properly vetted in the lab or in overtheair testing Develop and validate gateway infrastructure implementation, integration, and certification processes Provide technical leadership to subcontractors and vendors developing LEO, MEO and GEO compatible antennas, RF components, and baseband equipment Provide System Engineering leadership in the deployment of the Ground Infrastructure at SES facilities located worldwide Thought leader for technical input into the SES gateway strategy, and technical lead in the execution of the strategy Develop and document requirements, specifications, interfaces, test plans, and supporting the Operations, Maintenance and Sustainment programs Develop forwardlooking architectures and designs that support implementation of evolving SES products and capabilities Other adhoc tasks, as assigned by Line Manager Your Profile BS in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering or Computer Science, or similar 15 years of experience in developing satellite communication systems, satellite terminal systems or satellitebased networking data systems Masters degree in engineering, Computer Sciences, Telecommunications can replace 5 years of experience Experience in the development or application of gateway antenna systems and associated equipment At least 10 years of operational experience in remote baseband, IF, RF, antennas, and WANLAN equipment Indepth knowledge of Telecommunications Satellite Systems including VSAT systems Expert working knowledge of Satellite Communications Baseband, Network Management, and Modem systems equipment Highly experienced in developing and maintaining high availability satellite or telecommunications systems through the use of manned and unmanned facilities Complete understanding of GEO, MEO, and LEO telecommunications satellite technologies and systems Knowledge of internetbased network connectivity principles and implementation Thorough understanding of and ability to use System Engineering processes ExcellentGood command of MS Office package Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio Indepth understanding of LinuxUnix operating systems Actively seeks listens to feedback from customers and addresses them appropriately. Context ESA is currently designing the next generation of the European Satellite Navigation System, Galileo, which is planned to be deployed in the next decade. For the Phase B, ESA has requested the European Industry to support the system engineering activities through onsite services at ESAESTEC Task Description Were looking for a Senior System Architecture and Requirements Engineer to perform the following tasks Support ESA in the system design activities, especially for what concerns system architecture and system and segment requirements engineering Work in close cooperation with the ESA and Industry teams, extract system needs, critically assess and translate them into requirements and architectural concepts Draft system concepts, into the overall System Architecture Model, relevant to Galileo service provision evolution and supporting capabilities, considering performances, technology roadmaps, and system operability Organize and support Engineering Board, propose requirements changes and relevant justification, evaluate the impact of the change to the higher and lower levels, support the discussion and update the requirements accordingly Interact with the system analysts and support them in providing objectives, inputs and boundary conditions, and interpreting output results Act as book captain for company and ESA document as requested tradeoff documents, design definition and justification files, requirements specifications, traceability and justification, ICDs, AIV plan Ensure quality and on time delivery of company documents to the Prime contractor of the service Support ESA for technology activities reviews as needed. Required Profile and Experience A minimum of 7 years of Industrial experience in system engineering preferably for satellite systems is required, together with a degree in Engineering Working experience with ECSS and satellite architecture desirable. A background in satellite navigation related projects Galileo, EGNOS, satellite communication security, or Galileo PRS is a strong asset. Previous experience in institutional projects, especially with ESA, is an asset. Solid background in systems engineering processes and relevant documentation, systems analysis, interface management, architecture and requirements engineering, integration and verification planning. Handson experience with requirements engineering and change management. Experience with IBM DOORS at least as user is required. Understanding of and handson experience with MBSE and relevant tools. Familiarity with at least one of the major tools involved is required. Experience with Capella is an asset. Experience as system analyst and familiarity with main analysis tools Matlab, STK, communication analyses especially intersatellite link is required Familiarity with satellite communications, relevant problems and technologies involved The work requires proactivity, team cooperation, the ability to cope with shortterm deadlines and good negotiation skills The applicant shall be eligible for the EU security clearance up to Secret level
