Software System Engineer with focus on Data Processing 1913043 Job Description We are looking for a Software System Engineer with focus on Data Processing to support our activities with our customer EUMETSAT. The selected engineer will be embedded in a team taking care of different data processing tools for all EUMETSATs missions, such as EPS, MSG, MTG, EPSSG, JasonCS or Sentinel3, and will contribute to the definition of new tools and the evolution of existing ones. These tools support monitoring analysis and reporting and consist of offline ground elements for long trend analysis, quality monitoring and reporting. In particular, the tasks to be performed are Contribute to the definition, design, implementation and maintenance of architectures for data processing ground segments and their components. Support the integration, verification and validation activities at EUMETSAT. Support the operations of existing data processing ground segments and their maintenance and evolution. Settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures. Contribute to the procurement and installation of software, and the coordination with external providers of support services. Required Skills and Experience University degree in a relevant discipline. Relevant experience in preparation of requirements, design, interfaces and testing documentation for data processing systems considering the systems engineering aspects of data processing management and data provision Experience in SW design, SW development, Web applications programming, operation, maintenance and trouble shooting of large complex realtime data processing systems Competence in objectoriented software design and implementation possibly in the context of satellite instrument data processing systems Ability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation CC programming language experience in a UNIXLINUX based environment Database systems e.g. ORACLE, INFORMIX, PostgreSQL and MySQL Scripting languages e.g. shell scripting, highlevel languages e.g. Python, Java Knowledge of web technologies, programming and markup languages e.g. Apache, CGI, JavaScript, UML Knowledge of XML and related technologies XPATH, SVG, etc. Competence in the exploitation of modern hardware and operating systems at the application level e.g. parallel programming pthreads, MPI, OpenMP Familiarity with data formats used for meteorological satellite products Design and implementation of MMI using different toolkits and languages Desirable Skills and Experience Experience with the programming and usage of IDL and Fortran Experience in Web Programming Competence in SW testing, unit test suite maintenance, automated testing, verification and validation Experience in system design for quality control and calval systems Knowledge of relevant Standards, Quality Assurance and Configuration Management principles and applications Work Location Darmstadt, Germany Dates Application Deadline 19 July 2019 Start of Work As soon as possible Important Notes Before applying to this position, please read the page Notes to Applicants on the Solenix website under Career. Within the Data Processing Systems Engineering Competence Area DP SA of the System Engineering and Projects SEP Division, the Data Processing Systems Engineers support the design, developmentupgrade, verification and validation of Data Processing systems including the associated procurements, and support their maintenance and evolutions during the operations phase. DUTIES Define and maintain requirements and specifications in support to the development of new Data Processing systems or for upgrades to existing systems. Contribute and followup the related developmentsprocurements and its integration inside full scale Data Processing Systems andor Ground Segments Contribute to the definition of, execution and follow up of Integration and Verification Validation IVV testing of new or evolved Support scheduling and prioritisation of tasks and the assessment of the quality of deliverables Contribute to the definition and planning of the transition of Data Processing systems from development to operations Support the Data Processing Systems and Applications Competence Area Manager in defining long term plans and roadmaps to harmonise engineering, maintenance and evolutions of Data Processing Systems across all satellite systems exploited by EUMETSAT. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Proven experience in engineering of Data Processing systems following well established processes, covering the full development lifecycle and relevant technical standards e.g. ECSS, CCSDS, OGC Demonstrable knowledge of software development lifecycles and change control processes Competence in the area of Data Processing Systems Verification Validation VV activities, including automated testing, software testing, unit test suite maintenance, software debugging and profiling Ability to manage complex tasks with minimum supervision, including planning and prioritisation of activities, allocation and coordination of resources, monitoring and reporting Good interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to apply these to a team environment while working within a matrix structure Experience leadingcoordinating engineering teams and in the management of industrial contracts in relevant area will be considered an advantage. A university degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Software or Systems Engineering relevant discipline. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS The initial contract will be of 4 years duration, with subsequent 5 year contracts being awarded thereafter, subject to individual performance and organisation requirements. There is no limit to the amount of followup contracts a staff member can receive up to the EUMETSAT retirement age of 63 and there are certainly opportunities to establish a long career perspective at EUMETSAT. This post is graded A2A4 on the EUMETSAT salary scales. The minimum basic salary for this post is EURO 5,612 per month net of internal tax which may be negotiable based on skills and experience. The salary scale provides for increments on the anniversary of taking up employment, and scales are reviewed by the EUMETSAT Council with effect from 1 January each year. For our customer in Darmstadt we are looking for a Data Processing Systems and Applications Engineer to assist in the engineering activities of the data processing systems and application software for the operational and future programs within the Data Processing Systems and Applications Competence Area. The successful candidate will be based at EUMETSAT headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany However some flexibility is allowed up to 2 day a week of offsite work. Heshe will be part of the System Engineering and Projects SEP Division. Within the SEP division heshe will provide support to the Data Processing Systems and Applications Competence Area, which is responsible for the engineering and maintenance of online and offline operational data processing systems. Tasks and Responsibilities The tasks of the Candidate shall include day to day operations and maintenance, to the handling of anomalies, upgrades and configuration changes for these facilities. Tasks will also contain the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures. For procurements and maintenance services provided externally, the key person shall provide support to the management of the technical interface with the external contractors. Besides the above described routine tasks, the Candidate will also be expected to contribute to requirements specification, design and system engineeringreengineering, development andtesting activities in the field of science data processing that will become necessary for existing and future production systems. The tasks will include Maintenance and development of the Data Processing SystemsApplication Software it should be noted that for many of the facilities the first line maintenance is being performed by EUMETSAT in conjunction with the industrial contractor the second line maintenance is being performed by the industrial contractor under supervision and with support from EUMETSAT Procurement activities for maintenance and evolution activities, such as specification and maintenance of requirements for new or enhanced Data Processing SystemsApplications Software components that are going to be implemented by external contractors monitor their detailed design and implementation generate the test plans, test specificationprocedures, perform the acceptance of the externally developed components, support the integration testing in the ground segment and the operational validation Contribute to the definition and design of architectures of data processing ground segments and their components, their interfaces, and the validation and verification methods Coordinationinputs to planning and preparation of releases Coordination with other EUMETSAT Teams to prepare introduction of newupgraded components Generation and maintenance of technical baseline documentation Contribute to the operations of existing data processing ground segments Participation in technical meetings and formal reviews Analysis of the maintenance requirements and identification, procurement or implementation of the tools required to fulfil them Settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures Perform routine tasks in operational systems under configuration control such as Anomaly investigations, documentation and classification Participation in relevant Anomaly Review Boards Follow up of the delivery of SW resolutions for these anomalies Contribute to Configuration Management change control practices Contribute to building and distribution of application software releases and patches Verification of correct facility installation for the assigned facilities Contribute to the development, integration and configuration management of software developed by third parties, its installation, and configuration and testing Perform SW testing in a structured approach to verify that delivered SW is fulfilling the requirements or to demonstrate that problems have been corrected Skills and Experience The Key Person shall have the following mandatory attributes, skills and significant and relevant experience in Engineering of large, UNIX or LINUX based, complex, realtime data processing systems, including requirements specification, design, software maintenance or development, formal software testing and system integration Very good technical writing skills, in particular in the area of formal technical documentation e.g. requirements specification and design documentation, test plans and procedures, maintenance procedures Source code control systems e.g. Subversion, Git Software anomalies analysis, debugging, profiling, fixing and processing Following skills and experience is desirable Operating systems and application software upgrades andor porting to new platforms Objectoriented software design, implementation, and maintenance, including the use of UMLSysML based tools for supportingdocumenting the design, at least at the architectural level Web technologies and programming e.g. Apache, CGI, JavaScript, XML programming languages e.g. C, Java, Python The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French.
