Your responsibilities will include Acting as the Optical Architect within the project team for an optical instrument in space, comprising spectrometers, interferometers, high resolution spectral cameras and LIDAR systems Teaming up with Optical Instrument System Engineering and with the MechanicalThermal Instrument Architects and AIV team, and driving the instrument definition, development and design throughout the entire product life cycle technology studies and Phase A to E Proactively providing the necessary level of optomechanicalthermal design and engineering expertise to drive concept tradeoffs and feasibility analyses, considering manufacturability, alignment and accuracy aspects, costs andor procurement sources of componentsequipment, space compatibility and technological readiness Contributing to the instrument requirement definition, breakdown and budgeting, considering optical performance parameters, optomechanical tolerances and stabilities Maintenance and monitoring of all relevant optical performance budgets throughout the entire instrument development and manufacturing process Definition and performancesupervision of the necessary modelling and simulation, typically comprising optical design, stray light, polarisation Contributing to instrument development for questions of manufacturability, material selection, space compatibility, costs and technological readiness Ensuring the required level of synthesis and documentationpresentation of instrument design, optical performance and tradeoffs Interfacing with the customer in all optical aspects of the optical instrument and leading the optical engineering team within the project Supporting the procurement process for optical subsystems of the instrument, including the derivation of subsystem optical requirements, evaluation of subcontractor proposals, technical support for contract negotiations and supervision of subcontractors for the technical aspects until subsystem delivery Definition and supervision of optical ground support equipment activities, necessary for optical integration, verification, characterisation and calibration We are looking for candidates with the following skills Engineering degree in optical engineering or an equivalent discipline e.g. physics Broad background in optical design Code V, Zemax, ASAP, FRED and the related optomechanical aspects of optical instruments, preferably for space applications Detailed knowledge of spacebased optical instruments spectrometers, interferometers, high resolution cameras, etc. optical instrument hardware and related engineering including AIVAIT procurement of optical components readiness level of technologies and actual technology developments related to optical instruments Good interpersonal skills, good communication and convincing presentation capability Customer and resultsorientated English and German fluent negotiation level TO APPLY click here
