Optical Design Engineer

One of our Space Clients based in the UK are seeking an Optical Design Engineer to lead the technical concept development, systems modelling and optical design of solutions for the Optical Systems Group. This role will encompass all phases of the evolution of optical instrumentation development for spaceborne instrumentation. Our client has developed a range of Earth Observation payloads which are currently flying on existing missions. These include both reflective and refractive optical systems that cover a range of applications such as Agriculture, Forestry, Risk Management, Disaster Monitoring, Maritime, Defence and Security. Previously launched missions have included DMC3 was a 3 satellite constellation of high resolution imagers, 1m PAN, 4m Multispectral GSD and 24 km swath Alsat1B hosting a 24m multispectral and 12 m panchromatic GSD imager Carbonite1, a 1m GSD with a swath width of 5 km. The imager was a commercialoffthe shelf telescope adapted for space This is a permanent position based in The UK. Tasks Spaceborne optical instrument system design and development within a multidisciplinary team Design and development of optical systems from concept through to manufacture and system integration. Lead the following activities Optical system requirements trade analysis Optical system architecture definition Optical design Generate design concepts and documentation for technical bid support Provide the technical point of contact for the relevant optical systems. Define and manage the programmatic and technical aspects of work Qualifications MSc in Applied Optics or Physics with a concentration in optics preferred, however BSc and suitable relevant experience will be considered. Experience Optical design experience with proficiency in Zemax is desirable. Basic OptoMechanical knowledge to aid in optical systems development Knowledge and Skills Comprehensive knowledge of Optical Engineering, preferably within space applications, coupled with a working knowledge of the other engineering disciplines e.g. electronics, electrooptical device physics and optomechanics. End to end Optical Engineering knowledge and experience including one or more of the following Requirements Engineering and Trade offs ElectroOptomechanical Design and Analysis Integration of Optical Systems preferably including Space Systems Validation and Verification Engineering, including testing The ability to review and critique optical systems for application in space, balancing technical requirements with programmatic and budget constraints. Good team player able to work in closeknit teams with design, analysis, integration and test engineers is mandatory. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to plan and manage own work.

One of our Space Clients based in the UK are seeking an Optical Systems and AIV Engineer to lead in the design and delivery of a variety of Optical Payloads. This opportunity would allow an engineer to be involved in all aspects of the development including the Assembly, Integration and Verification making use of high performance equipment such as Interferometers, CMMs, as well as bespoke test and alignment equipment. Our client has developed a range of Earth Observation payloads which are currently flying on existing missions. The imager was a commercialoffthe shelf telescope adapted for space We are currently working on our next generation of Earth Observation Imagers Key Tasks Development of spaceborne optical systems within a multidisciplinary team performing optical instrument system design, being the technical point of contact for the relevant optical systems. Design and development of optical systems from concept through to manufacture, system integration and verification. Management of new optical solutions including the programmatic and technical aspects of work packages relevant to area of expertise. Define and own technical requirements specifications for optical payload systems, including trade analysis of these requirements working closely with the spacecraft system engineer to identify derived requirements Development planning, budget and schedule management Ownership of risk registers and appropriate mitigation as agreed with the project manager The ability to pragmatically review and critique optical systems for application in space, balancing technical requirements with programmatic and budget constraints Assembly, Integration and Verification of optical instruments within a cleanroom environment Optical and mechanical alignment of instruments Building of Optical, Mechanical and Electrical ground support equipment Operation of equipment such as Interferometers, CMMs, Thermal Vacuum Chamber, MTF rig, Integrating Spheres, etc Qualifications MSc in Optics, Physics or engineering ideally with proven related practical optical or spacecraft experience Experience Comprehensive knowledge of Optical Engineering, applied to space applications, coupled with a working knowledge of other engineering disciplines e.g. electronics, electrooptical device physics and optomechanics. Knowledge and experience of other spacecraft systems would be an advantage The candidate should have basic optomechanical knowledge to aid in optical system development. Knowledge in materials and component selection, in the space domain. End to end Optical Engineering knowledge and experience including Requirements Engineering and Trade offs Electrooptomechanical Design and Analysis Integration of Optical Systems preferably including Space Systems Knowledge Skills Optical design experience with proficiency in Zemax and knowledge of design software such as Solidworks is desirable Familiarity with optics and optical testing methodologies Selfmotivated, creative, high attention to detail and accountable Ability to work autonomously or within project teams and a real company player Good communication skills Ability to work under pressure in an organised and responsive manner Knowledge of spacecraft systems design would be an advantage including materials Creative problem solving Ability to plan and manage own work

Requirements Applicants for this post should have a university degree at least Masters degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant physical science or engineering subject, together with a demonstrated background and experience in systems for Earth Atmospheric Composition monitoring and science studies in a space project environment as well as knowledge of aerosols and ozone observational data. Experience working with atmospheric composition in EarthSystem models and data assimilation as well as background and experience on the specific issues relevant to bright limb, solar and stellar occultation observing systems are assets. The candidate must possess solid analytical skills and the command of the physics and techniques of Earth limb observation systems bright limb, solarstellar occultation, together with the capability to critically analyse the work performed by industry in the relevant areas, identify problems and proposeinstigate corrective actions. The candidate shall demonstrate to be proficient with programming tools and languages relevant to the implementation and maintenance of the system performance models e.g. MATLAB. Specific Tasks The holder of this post will contribute to all aspects project internal activities, monitoringreview of the relevant industrial activities, interaction with Mission Users and Scientists relevant to the mission performance of the ALTIUS mission up to Level 2. The post holder will report to the ALTIUS System and Engineering Manager. The principle tasks and responsibilities include Support the definition and maintenance of mission and system level requirements in the following areas o Mission observation requirements and mission data products requirements o ALTIUS EndtoEnd simulator and Ground Processor Prototype GPP o Internal and External characterisation and calibration of the instrument Develop and maintain mission performance mathematical models and tools to support the assessment of the relevant industrial development activities and of the compliance of the system design to the mission performance requirements Maintain mission level performance and error budgets, in coordination with the other ALTIUS project team members. Analyse the compliance of the mission performance budgets with the endtoend mission performance requirements and propose corrective actions in case of deviation Monitor and critically analyse the mission level performance requirement allocation, their flow down to the relevant contributors, the associated margins, their evolution and their verification Monitor and review the definition and implementation of the ALTIUS characterisation, calibration and validation plans and follow up the specification, procurement and verificationvalidation of the relevant equipment and activities Support the payload team for aspects relevant to instrument performance requirements flowdown and instrument performance verification, including relevant models and tools Follow up the End to End Simulator and GPP specification, procurement, verificationvalidation and acceptance activities Acquire working knowledge of the tools for test data generation purposes and internal mission level verification activities Support the preparation, execution and analysis of the relevant inflight calval operations during the commissioning phase Support Payload Data Ground Segment PDGS Requirement definition and reviews for what concern the Ground processor aspects Support crossverification activities of the PDGS operational ground processor against the Ground Processor Prototype Support the establishment, maintenance and running of the ALTIUS Mission Advisory Group MAG for what concerns mission instrument performance aspects, including endtoend mission performance verification and compliance status Interact with the ALTIUS Mission Users Community and Scientific Community for what concerns Mission definition, Products definition and mission instrument performance aspects. Support the System and Engineering Manager and the other ALTIUS project team members in all aspects related to mission performance, as necessary for the effective execution of the ALTIUS project. The Mission Performance Engineer will cooperate closely with the ALTIUS payload team in the execution of the relevant tasks. Furthermore shehe will be supported by and is expected to closely cooperate with specialist engineers from the ALTIUS team, from the Earth Observation Projects Department and from the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality DTEC as appropriate.
