Optical Instrument Payload Engineer

The ALTIUS mission aims at the development of an Earth limb sounder mission based on a small satellite. Its main objective is the monitoring of the distribution and evolution of stratospheric ozone at high vertical resolution in support of long term monitoring and operational services. Measurements of concentration profiles of other atmospheric species as well as of aerosol extinction vertical profiles are also envisaged in the frame of monitoring and scientific activities. The holder of this post will contribute to all aspects project internal activities, monitoringreview of the relevant industrial activities, interaction with Mission Users and Scientists relevant to the mission performance of the ALTIUS mission up to Level 2. The post holder will report to the ALTIUS System and Engineering.

As national expertise institute SRON gives counsel to the Dutch government and coordinates national contributions to international space missions. SRON stimulates the implementation of space science in our society. The expertise group Instrument Science has a vacancy for an Optical Instrument scientist fm Vac. nr. 1257 You will be part of the Instrument Science Group where optical experts contribute to space instruments ranging from Earth Observation and Exoplanet characterization in the visible and near infrared wavelength bands, to cryogenically cooled instruments for Astrophysics in the far infrared. Project Within the climate and air quality program of SRON, you will work on the development of novel optical instrumentation for Earth Observation. Your responsibility will be in performance analysis of space spectrometers and polarimeters. Furthermore, you will develop test setups and perform the calibration onground and inorbit of these optical instruments. You will work in a diverse team together with space industry and knowledge institute team members. SRON projects are carried out in Dutch national context in collaboration with international space industry and agencies. Tasks The candidate will perform the following tasks As part of a system engineering team, contribute as performance specialist to the development of advanced optical payloads Act as calibration scientist in flight hardware projects Emphasis on design, development and analysis of instrument calibration Analyze optical performance test results Present results in documents, scientific articles and presentations. Specific tasks to be performed Support of Sentinel4 at 40 level and upcoming Sentinel7 Carbonsattype mission, Sentinel8 Thermal IR mission and Sentinel10 Hyperspectral mission Phase AB1 studies planned parallel studies in each case. Running of detector technology development activities Large Format SWIR detector and a number of detector predevelopment activities funded by EOEP. Support to technology developments in the field of quantum key distribution. General tasks to be performed Support to technology development contracts and performance of inhouse design work. In particular, assist in the establishment of requirements and configurations for payload equipment and subsystems involving Solid state lasers. Fibreoptic components.
