Samsung to launch first Tizen phone at end of Q2
2014-04-16 15:10:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics' new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, is selling faster than its predecessor the S4, according to Yoon Han-kil, senior vice president of Samsung's product strategy team. Samsung launched the phone in double the number of countries on 11 April, while also offering significant discounts and free gifts with the device. In an interview with Reuters, Yoon said the S5 "is selling faster than the S4 so far, though it's difficult to share specific numbers as we're still at early stages". He added that the company expects S5 sales to be "much better than the S4". Though Samsung did not offer any sales target for the S5, the company sold more than 10 million S4s in the first month of the phone's launch. Yoon said the S5 should do significantly better than this. Yoon also said Samsung was working to introduce at least two smartphones running on its own Tizen operating system. The first, a high-end model, should be available by the end of Q2, while the second would mainly target the mid-market. Yoon said that although Android "still needs to be our main business", Tizen or Windows would be used for markets that Android could not address.

2014-04-16 01:03:19| TechNewsWorld
After an 18-month lull, Windows Phone took a step closer to an upgrade on Monday as Microsoft released version 8.1 of the operating system to developers. Unlike most developer versions of software, however, consumers can download and run the latest edition of Windows Phone on their mobile device -- as long as they're willing to void its warranty until their carrier OKs the upgrade.

US operators agree to mobile phone 'kill switch'
2014-04-15 22:52:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) US mobile industry group CTIA and participating operators have announced the 'Smartphone Anti-Theft Voluntary Commitment', an effort by the industry to deter smartphone thefts in the US. Each device manufacturer and operating system signatory of Part One of this commitment agrees that new models of smartphones first manufactured after July 2015 for retail sale in the US will offer, at no cost to consumers, a baseline anti-theft tool that is preloaded or downloadable on smartphones. This provides the connected capability to remote wipe the user's data on the smartphone in the event it is lost or stolen, render the smartphone inoperable to an unauthorised user except in accordance with FCC rules for 911 emergency communications, prevent reactivation without the authorised user's permission to the extent technologically feasible, reverse the inoperability if the smartphone is recovered by the authorised user and restore user data on the smartphone to the extent feasible. The following companies are participating in the voluntary commitment: Apple, Asurion, AT&T, Google, HTC America, Huawei Device USA, Motorola Mobility, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung Telecommunications America, Sprint, T-Mobile USA, US Cellular and Verizon Wireless.
