After Toledo water scare, states ask EPA for help
2014-09-07 11:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Detroit Free Press: Algae that turned Lake Erie green and produced toxins that fouled the tap water for 400,000 people in Toledo are becoming a big headache for those who keep drinking water safe even far beyond the Great Lakes. But with no federal standards on safe levels for drinking algae-tainted water and no guidelines for treating or testing it either, water quality engineers sometimes look for solutions the same way school kids do their homework. We are Googling for answers, said Kelly Frey, who oversees...

EPA rules need a carbon tax
2014-09-06 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Tennessean: For those deeply concerned about climate change, the new EPA rules limiting CO2 emissions from existing power plants are a welcome first step. However, there is room for improvement in the draft rules before they become final in June 2015. The biggest flaw is that they dont explicitly name a carbon tax as a mechanism states could use to comply. Among economists, a carbon tax is widely accepted as the most economically efficient and cost-effective way to reduce CO2 emissions. Detractors who argue...
