Satellite Instrument Data Processing Engineer

This is a permanent position, calling for experience of realtime satellite instrument data processing. You will be placed on assignment based near Frankfurt in Germany for several years. Candidates should ideally be available to start in October 2015. Our client is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. Vast quantities of data are produced and user communities throughout the world are able to access both current and historical data sets. The demanding realtime environment places much emphasis on adherence to quality and configuration management standards and procedures. The main working language is English and fluency in English is essential. The role will embrace Data ingestion, processing and product distribution Data and product analysis Testing and implementation of new products Settingup and implementation of operational procedures and documentation Anomaly investigation First line maintenance Coordination with external organisations and service providers Attendance at technical meetings Participation in formal reviews The key experience and attributes sought are At least 3 years experience in operations of realtime satellite instrument data processing systems Experience of instrument data processing of Level0 data and generation of meteorological or environmental products Experience in near real time data driven automated systems in large computer networks Experience of validating complex remote sensing data processing systems Experience with UNIXLinux operating systems Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous Imaging and sounding instrumentation for remote sensing spacecraft Development and maintenance of operational procedures and configuration data Programming languages e.g. C, C and IDL Scripting languages and databases e.g. Perl, Python, shell, Oracle Spacecraft andor ground segment operations Communication protocols TCPIIP, MBSS Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems CCSDS formats Knowledge of geophysical remote sensing data processing, e.g. Image Navigation and Registration INR, radiometric correction, calibration algorithms and retrieval of geophysical parameters Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent. Satellite EndtoEnd Instrument Chains Support

Our client is seeking a consultant to provide Satellite EndtoEnd Instrument Chains Support to mission performance, processing chains, instrument calibration and product validation. In this role the key person will typically provide support for the following tasks contributing directly to the tasks andor following up work done in other teams Mission performances Identification of contributors to performances radiometric spectral geometric allocation apportionment to elements of the instrument chains. Definition of approach for performance modelling review of adequacy of related modelling tools. Compilation and analysis of endtoend performance budgets, as needed collecting input from space and ground segment studies cross check against applicable requirements. Processing chains Definition of overall approach for the development, verification and validation VV of the processing chains as part of the overall EPSSG System. Identification of implications of processing concepts for System ground segment requirements, architecture and design. Identification of required tools and test data for the development and VV of the processing chains as relevant generation of technical documents to support tool developmentprocurement. Support for the development of relevant tools and the generation of required test data sets. Following up of validation of processing algorithms and of verification of processing chains in the ground segment as relevant for System VV of the endtoend instrument chains. Instrument calibration product validation Analysis of the implications of instrument calibration concepts for the System and ground segment and specifically for onground data processing. Support for the definition of the required infrastructure to perform tuning maintenance of calibration data and to validate generated products. In addition the keyperson will be involved in some more general tasks Regular review of System level documentation dealing with requirements, system concepts, architecture and design, technical analyses, to identify information of importance for endtoend instrument chains. Support for coordination of interdisciplinary meetings of relevance for the instrument chains. Support for the preparation of documentation for System level reviews, during the covered period mainly the System Requirements Review and the Preliminary Design Review. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years experience in the field of engineering of space and or ground systems, in the area of Earth Observations from space, along with a minimum of 5 years of direct involvement in the development of relevant instruments andor the related onground processing chain, with an indepth understanding of mutual implications. Candidates should have a good overall knowledge of instruments, the platform environment, processing algorithms, ground segment environment, to the extent relevant for endtoend instrument chains. All applicants should be able to demonstrate the ability to perform analyses of a System combined space and ground segment top down and to perform synthesis and compile technical budgets bottom up. Candidates shall be educated to a minimum of degree level or similar and fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Typical tasks will be Identification of the suite of test tools and test data required to support VV activities, and definition of development procurement approach and associated planning Preparation of User Requirement Documents, Statements of Work, etc., as needed as input for development or procurement activities Development and validation of test tools and their maintenance Support for procurement of test tools and data, including the analysis of received deliverables and attending acceptance tests Support for acceptance of test tools and data provided by partners Simulation of test data sets for VV using available tools compilation of test data sets using real data from satellite and instrument onground tests or inorbit operation For tools associated with the ground segment, input for the specification and test of relevant interfaces Support for configuration management of tools and test data sets Operation of the tools, or support for it, when used for system and ground segment VV activities Contributions to the analysis of test results and the preparation of test reports. The key experience and attributes sought are At least 5 years of general experience with the development of onground processing of data from satellite instruments for Earth observation At least 5 years of direct involvement in VV activities for instrument processing chains, including production of test tools and of test data At least 5 years of experience with software specification, design and development and relevant standards Very good skills in higher programming languages, such as Fortran, CC, Java Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent.
