Deadline for applications 30th April The ALTIUS Project aims at the development of an Earth limb sounder mission based on a small satellite. Its main objective is the monitoring of the distribution stratospheric ozone at high vertical resolution in support of longterm monitoring and operational services. ALTIUS Measurements of concentration profiles of other atmospheric species as well as of aerosol extinction vertical profiles are also envisaged in the frame of monitoring and scientific activities. Tasks Responsibilities You will contribute to all aspects project internal activities, monitoringreview of the relevant industrial activities, interaction with Mission Users and Scientists relevant to the mission performance of the ALTIUS mission up to Level 2. You will report to the ALTIUS System and Engineering Manager and the principal tasks and responsibilities include 1 Maintenance of mission and system level requirements, monitoring and critically analysing the requirement allocation, their flow down to the relevant contributors, the associated margins, their evolution and their verification, in the following areas Observation requirements and mission data products requirements EndtoEnd simulator and Ground Processor Prototype GPP Internal and External characterisation and calibration of the instrument 2 Support the payload team for aspects relevant to instrument performance requirements flowdown and instrument performance verification, including relevant models and tools 3 Follow up the EndtoEnd Simulator and GPP procurement, verificationvalidation and acceptance activities Acquire working knowledge of the tools for test data generation purposes and internal mission level verification activities Develop and maintain additional mission performance mathematical models and tools to support the assessment of the relevant industrial development activities 4 Maintain mission level performance and error budgets, and analyse their compliance with the endtoend mission performance requirements and propose corrective actions in case of deviation 5 Monitor and review the definition and implementation of the ALTIUS characterisation, calibration and validation plans and follow up the specification, procurement and verificationvalidation of the relevant equipment and activities 6 Support the preparation, execution and analysis of the relevant inflight CALVAL operations during the commissioning phase 7 Support Payload Data Ground Segment PDGS development for what concern the Ground processor aspects and crossverification activities of the PDGS operational ground processor against the GPP 8 Support the running of the ALTIUS Mission Advisory Group MAG for what concerns mission instrument performance aspects, including endtoend mission performance verification and compliance status 9 Interact with the ALTIUS Mission Users Community and Scientific Community for what concerns Mission definition, Products definition and mission instrument performance aspects. 10 Support the System and Engineering Manager and the other ALTIUS project team members in all aspects related to mission performance, as necessary for the effective execution of the ALTIUS project. The Mission Performance Engineer will cooperate closely with the ALTIUS Instrument team in the execution of the relevant tasks. You will be supported by and are expected to closely cooperate with specialist engineers from the ALTIUS team, from the Earth Observation Projects Department and from the Directorate of Technical and Quality Management DTEC as appropriate. Requirements You should have a university degree at least Masters degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant physical science or engineering subject. You will be able to demonstrate experience in performance assessment of optical instrumentation for atmospheric observation including image processing. You will also have experience working with Earth limb observation systems as well as knowledge of aerosols and ozone observational data are assets. You shall demonstrate proficiency with programming languages relevant to the implementation and maintenance of the system performance models e.g. MATLAB and python. You shall possess solid analytical skills together with broad, systemoriented thinking, and the ability and motivation to rapidly learn and switch within a wide range of application domains. You shall have the capability to critically analyse the work performed by industry in the relevant areas, identify problems and propose corrective actions. You shall demonstrate good communication skills, ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team within the boundaries of assigned tasks and a stringent schedule, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the outside world Industry, MAG and User Community.

The E2E performance chain compromises of several components scene generator, instrument simulator, instrument data processors. You will be integrated in the relevant Project Teams and will report to the System Manager or equivalent role within the Project. The support will include Operating an uptodate copy of E2E software components in ESTEC to perform specific runs in order to checkrepeat verification and validation procedures provided by industries, and ensuring proper methods are implemented Extending the test plan of industry to make sensitivity analysis or execute specific test requested by Projects in order to monitor instrument performance and to analyse impacts on the mission performance resulting from deviations during the development programme Supporting reviews of the E2E software components and participate to project meetings Supporting Test Data production and verification Supporting the analysis of the data collected during onground and inorbit calibration and characterisation campaigns Developing any needed software tool to support all the mentioned activities Providing necessary inputs for the relevant internal and external meetings Detecting SW anomalies to be reported to SW developer for analysis Ensuring that the E2E Mission Performance Simulator chain and its components and algorithms meet the required functionality and performance, taking into account system, instrument, geophysical model and calibrationvalidation facility aspects In performing the above duties, the Contractor will closely work with the other staff of the programme. Requirements You will have a University Master degree in Physics or Engineering or an equivalent qualification. A Master degree in Computer Science could be accepted if relevant experience with Earth Observation algorithms is demonstrated. You will be able to demonstrate A firsthand experience and proficiency in the development of numerical modelling software preferably using compiled languages CCJava, development environments and using the Unix operating system. Familiarity with highperformance computing environment such as GPU and cloud processing Good familiarity with computer programs such as Matlab, Python or IDL. Knowledge of specific tools such as image analysis tools is considered a plus. Background knowledge of the problematics involved in Earth Observation modelling. A system viewpoint with the ability and willingness to assess the impact that each element brings to the overall mission performance.
