Mozilla Offers Free Secure File-Sharing Service

Mozilla has announced Firefox Send, a free encrypted file-sharing service that works in a any browser. To share a file, you simply visit the Send site and drag your file to a box on the Web page. Unregistered users may upload up to 1 gigabyte in files, while registered users have a 2.5 GB allowance. After uploading your files, you choose an expiration time for the link used to share them.

Keybase Releases Encrypted File-Sharing iPhone App

Keybase last week announced the alpha release of the Keybase app for the iPhone with a cryptographically secure file mount. Users can write data in an automatically created folder in this format: /keybase/public/username. Files written in the folder are signed automatically and appear as plain text files. The folder prevents server-side and man-in-the-middle attacks, Keybase said.

Lenovo fixes hard-coded password in file-sharing utility

Lenovo has patched several software flaws in a file-sharing utility, which could allow attackers to browse and make copies of files. The flaws were found by Core Security, which described in an advisory a lengthy back and forth dialog with Lenovo starting in late October over the problems.

Canada Levitates Data from File-Sharing Sites

Canada's spy agency, the Communications Security Establishment, has been eavesdropping on 102 free file upload sites, including Sendspace, Rapidshare and Megaupload, which has been shut down. A CSE program called "Levitation" lets analysts access information on 10-15 million uploads and downloads of files from such sites daily, according to documents released by whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

Popular UK Sports File-Sharing Site Shuttered

The Sports Torrent Network, a brazenly named file-sharing site, shut down after UK police threatened to put its operators behind bars for up to 10 years. TSTN was a hotbed for illicit broadcasts of European soccer, the National Hockey League, Formula 1 races and more. The site reportedly had about 20,000 members, making it "possibly the largest site of its type."
