A European Union court upheld on Monday the European Commission's decision in 2012 to block a planned merger of Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext. The Commission blocked the deal to create the world's biggest stock exchange because it said it would have created a "near monopoly" in European financial derivatives.

Court Sets Date for Preliminary Injunction Hearing in Sysco-U.S. Foods Antitrust Case

This past Wednesday, Judge Amit Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia set a hearing from May 5 through May 8, with up to three additional days if necessary, to consider the FTC's request for a preliminary injunction to block Sysco Corp. and U.S. Foods, Inc. from merging prior to the conclusion of the FTC's administrative trial. Sysco and U.S. Foods, the nation's two largest food distributors, announced the merger in December 2013.

On Thursday, an amicus brief was filed with the US Supreme Court on behalf of 379 American corporations, asking the court to end the confusion and make gay marriage legal throughout the country. An amicus curiae , literally "friend of the court," is a filing by someone who is not a party to a case, but who claims to have a substantial interest in it.
