France adds record 1.13 mln FTTH homes passed in Q2

(Telecompaper) The number of homes passed by FTTH in France increased by a record 1.13 million in the second quarter to 15.58 million. That's an increase of 32 percent year-on-year, but the roll-out needs to accelerate further, said regulator Arcep in its latest quarterly broadband report.

YouTube fined USD 170 mln for violating children's privacy with tracking cookies

(Telecompaper) Google and its subsidiary YouTube have agreed to pay USD 170 million to settle allegations by the Federal Trade Commission and the New York Attorney General that YouTube illegally collected personal information from children without their parents' consent. This is the largest fine ever under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, first passed in the US in 1998.

Amazon fined EUR 4 mln in France for abusive Marketplace contract terms

(Telecompaper) The French consumer regulator DGCCRF has won a fine of EUR 4 million against Amazon for abusive contract terms for third-party sellers on the online marketplace. Amazon must also change seven of its contract clauses to improve the sellers' rights, within six months or face further fines of EUR 10,000 per day.
South Korea ends July with 2 mln 5G subs, adds 850,000 5G users in August

(Telecompaper) South Korea's 5G user base increased by 500,000 for three consecutive months from May. 5G customer additions are estimated to have jumped to 850,000 in August, boosted by the launch of Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 5G smartphone on the local market. In August, Samsung announced that pre-orders for its Galaxy Note 10 smartphone topped 1 million units in South Korea. Domestic operators SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus started taking pre-orders for the device on 9 August. Samsung reached 1.3 million Galaxy Note 10 pre-orders, which represents a 2-fold increase from the total number of pre-orders received for the Galaxy Note 9 on the local market.
UK launches GBP 30 mln rural 5G trials, proposes taller masts

(Telecompaper) The UK government has launched a competition to test 5G applications in rural areas and proposed a series of planning reforms to improve and extend mobile coverage. The latter includes the proposal to allow operators to build taller phone masts in the countryside with a view to eliminating mobile reception blind spots.
