Location ESAC, Villanueva de la Caada, Spain Description The Internal Research Fellow will be based in the Science Operations Department at ESAC. Both the Science Support Office at ESTEC and the Science Operations Department at ESAC offer the opportunity for the successful candidates to conduct research programmes covering many areas of Space Science. These research activities are coordinated by the ESA Science Faculty, a body consisting of scientists from both establishments. Research Fellows are encouraged to participate in these programmes, led by the scientific staff and with engineering, technical and administrative support. Research Fellows are in principle fully dedicated to scientific research and have no functional duties. However, they may spend up to 20 of their time on scientific activities in support of an ESA mission. Additionally, they are encouraged to take an active part in the scientific life of the establishments. Fields of activitiesresearch The proposed research topic should be related either to ESAs scientific missions, to the space research programmes of the ESA member states or to the scientific activities of the ESA Science Faculty. A brief summary of the research activities carried out by Faculty members can be found on the ESTEC faculty research and ESAC faculty research pages or at the research programme overview page. Candidates should consult these pages to identify which of the two establishments offers the most relevant environment for the candidates research proposal and to identify one or more staff members with whom to work. While certain research programmes can be pursued at both establishments, in most cases the location of the mentor defines where a fellowship is held. Overview The ExoMars 2016 mission is being implemented as part of the Robotic Exploration Programme of ESA. The Trace Gar Orbiter TGO will be the second ESA orbiter at Mars, in the footsteps of Mars Express. TGO will accommodate 4 scientific instruments for the detection of atmospheric trace gases, the study of their temporal and spatial evolution, the localisation of their source regions, and the mapping of subsurface water. The Science Ground Segment SGS for the ExoMars 2016 mission in its operational configuration will consist of the Science Operations Centre SOC, located at ESAC, Madrid, the Russian SOC NNK, located in Moscow, Russia and the PI facilities, at their respective institutions. The main uplink tasks of the EXOMARS SOC are as follows Science Operations Uplink Data Production Production of SGS components for operations SGS development, including participation in the continuing training of personnel to cover all SGS operational activities, the preparation of the training strategy and the SGS operations plan and the definition and testing of the SGS routine and contingency procedures. Science Operations covering Nominal Science Operations and Commissioning Operations. The services required to cover the above tasks are detailed below. GAIA Science Operations Engineer at ESAC

Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our support to Gaia within ESAC. Overview ESAs Gaia mission is mapping to microarcsecond accuracy 1 of the stellar population of our galaxy that is around one thousand million objects down to apparent magnitude 20. Each object will be seen about 100 times over the five year mission. The data reduction of the 100 Terabytes of downlinked data is estimated to require a Petabyte storage system. The processing will be community wide effort performed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC in which ESAC plays a coordination role. The ESAC team in Gaias Science Operations Centre SOC is heavily involved in DPAC especially in the overall architecture and developing and operating key parts of the core processing systems. The core processing includes Initial Data Treatment IDT, First Look FL and the Astrometric Global Iterative Solution AGIS to solve for the many unknown astrometric parameters. The processing is distributed over five locations and ESAC forms the hub for data exchange via the Main Database MDB. The MDB forms the input for all processing and will be augmented with the output of all processing to arrive at a new version. The production of processing software for Gaia will continue through operations to final catalogue production around 2019. The SOC maintains core software but also receives packages from external entities to be integrated and run in SOC. Specific Service Tasks As part of the service the following main activities will have to be carried out Contribute to procedure writing and the implementation of those procedures Follow procedures and operate Gaia SOC systems, predominantly the daily pipeline modules Test SOC systems for the daily processing of Gaia data Test SOC systems for the generation of payload operations request Further test and scale SOC products such as MDB Participate in the optimisation of software processing Gather operational constraints for software running at SOC Interact appropriately with and support the providers of all software SOC systems Interact appropriately with the users of DPCE data products and other Data Processing Centres Assist in automation of SOC procedures nominally Gaia SOC will only be manned normal working hours Contribute to the maintenance of the overall system, including configuration control and versioning Report on operational activities including the gathering and presentation of processing summary statistics. Overview This work is to provide a number of specialised services to support ESA in Computer System Engineering at ESAC for the missions science operations centres. The SREO Computer Support Group CSG is providing computer support to all science operations centres and science ground segments located at ESAC, either in development or in operational phase. Under this work package, service shall be provided to support ESA in system administration activities for those computer systems used for science operations and research activities. These computers are general servers or workstations mainly based on Linux and Oracle Solaris, Macintoshes, Technical PCs and for Office Automation activities. The environment also includes Disk Storage infrastructure, Virtual infrastructure as well as GRID and Cloud computing infrastructures. Systems can be physical machines or provided through virtual infrastructure. These systems are connected to networks organized by functions operational, office and development, external services, GRID, Cloud and administration networks. Specific tasks would include installation, configuration, deployment, integration, monitoring, administration and maintenance of these computer systems, scientific and commercial software installation and administration, data backup and retrieval, interface with IT vendors for quotation, installation and maintenance agreements, users IT support, defining and operating computers operational procedures, hardware inventory tracking.
